Clay Guida vs. Sean Sherk Likely for UFC on Versus in Denver
Lightweights Clay Guida and Sean Sherk will look to bounce back from recent losses when they square off at “UFC on Versus: Vera vs. Jones” on March 21 in Denver, Colorado. The Northwest Indiana Times reported on Saturday that the matchup was in the works for the Versus-televised event.
Guida (25-11) emerged as a lightweight contender with three-straight wins from 2008 to 2009, including a victory over Nate Diaz, but has since dropped back-to-back fights to top 155-pounders Kenny Florian and Diago Sanchez.
Sherk (33-4-1), a former lightweight champion, is just 1-2 since returning to the UFC after serving a suspensions for steroids, dropping bouts to BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar while picking up a win over Tyson Griffin. “The Muscle Shark” had been scheduled to fight at UFC 108 earlier this month against Jim Miller, but a cut forced him to withdraw from the bout.
UFC on Versus is headlined by Brandon Vera vs. Jon Jones and also features Anthony Johnson vs. John Howard.

Wow, this fight surely won’t be either fighters’ last fight in the UFC, however Joe Silva has definately created a fight that is a must-win for both fighters. No doubt this will be an exciting scrap.
i think this is a must win for clay, i got sherk tho
i dont mean i think clay will get the boot by the ufc im just talking about his status as a top 5 155, clay will always be a good gatekeeper for the ufc
I think Sherk has to put on a strong showing for this fight. He has been around for a while and his game doesnt seem to be improving/evolving to be a contender in such a strong division. Both fighters need a solid finish to stay at the upper end of the 155′s.
yes this is a fight that i have been lookin forward 2 i hope that sherk can pull this one off if he wins i would like 2 c him fight sam stout or spencer fisher
I cann’t wait for this one.
This is not a must win for Guida. No way in hell. If anything this is a must win for Sherk. Though I highly doubt either guy gets the boot if he loses. Guida always puts on a hell of a show and Dana loves him. His job is more than secure. Sherk has more pressure to win this fight with his recent losses and injuries, etc… he’s been dormant for too long.
This UFN is better then some of the UFC events (explain UFC 89) this is going to be a very good card 4 free at that.
This fight is going to be free??
Yep, it’ll be free on Versus.
IMO this is a lot more of a “must win” for Sherk than Guida, who has a pretty ardent and vocal following in the MMA community.
Sherk, in spite of being a former champion, seems almost outdated in comparison to the hyperactive Guida..
From a fans point of view I’d much rather see Guida’s fights over Sherks for the entertainment factor, but if I think about the fight and Sherk’s skill sets vs Guida’s I think Sherk wins if he uses his wrestling.
This is simply Joe Silva showing off, WHAT A MATCH-UP!!!!!
