There is no shortage of big time bouts going down in the next couple of weeks, and one of them, will see Chad Mendes face Frankie Edgar. Not only is it a pivotal fight because of each man’s abilities and accomplishments, but it will likely determine who will challenge for the 145 belt next.
Recently both men attended a media call to promote the December 11th bout, which will headline the TUF 22 Finale in Las Vegas. When Mendes was asked to break down the match-up, here is some of what “Money” had to say (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“I feel like me and Frankie have pretty similar styles, as far as our boxing and wrestling,” Mendes said. “I feel like I have a little more power. People say he has the speed advantage there. I think ultimately this is going to come down to heart. This is a fight that, I’m not going to back down. I know Frankie is not going to back down. It’s going to come down to grit and who wants it the most. We both have wrestling backgrounds, and we have that ability to grind, so this is a fight that fight IQ is going to play a huge role in.”
Kind of hard to argue with that assessment no? Edgar is ridiculously fast and has seemingly endless cardio, while Mendes has been known to bomb out guys with his big right hand. Both guys have also faced lots of top tier opponents, so fight IQ will also play a huge factor as Mendes noted.
Heart? Grit? Yup. That’s also going to be pivotal.
The big question is, however, what if Mendes wins? Will he get a third fight with Jose Aldo? Or a rematch with Conor McGregor? We know Edgar will get a crack at the belt if he’s victorious.
Aldo-McGregor will take place the next night on December 12th at UFC 194.
