This time last year, few if anyone could have predicted that Jose Aldo would be the underdog heading into his next title defense, but as UFC 194 approaches, here we are. Does the featherweight mind? Apparnetly not.

Yes, as the December 12th card approaches, Mr. Aldo, the only featherweight champ the UFC has ever had, is the underdog verus Conor McGregor. It’s a pretty, pretty interesting development, considering Aldo is widely considered to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet. Not only that, but there’s still a sizable camp of people who aren’t completely sold that”Notorious” is as good as he says he is.

Recently Aldo spoke to Brazil’s SportTV,  and while doing so, the Nova Uniao was asked if he’s bothered by his underdog status. The champion said this (quote via Bloody Elbow.com):

“Whoever wants to make money, all they have to do is bet on Aldo. It’ll be the easiest money they will ever make in their lives,” Aldo said. “Just like what happened to Ronda Rousey against Holly Holm. That’s not a problem for me. I don’t know who decides who gets to be the favorite. I focus on myself. I know what I can do and what I have to do to win.”

How about that? Now sure, Aldo could just be saying this and maybe inside it’s eating him up that McGregor’s the favorite. But, on the other hand, this puts him in a position that he hasn’t been in years. Perhaps being the underdog will alleviate some of the pressure that he’s carrying? If you include his WEC title defenses, Aldo has defended his belt 9 times. If he defeats McGregor nex month, he will tie Anderson Silva’s record for defenses.

If you’re wondering what the odds currently are for Aldo-McGregor, the latter is the favorite in the -165 to -170 range.
