UFC 194: “Jacare” Souza Says Luke Rockhold “Leapfrogged” Him, Should be Fighting For Title Next

“Jacare” Souza repeatedly said he should challenge Chris Weidman next, and now that Luke Rockhold will do so at UFC 194, has he changed his mind? No. No he hasn’t.

Earlier this year, the consensus was that “Jacare” Souza was next in line for a title shot, provided he got by Yoel Romero. That fight got delayed, however, and Souza ended up defeating Chris Camozzi. Rockhold, meanwhile, took out Lyoto Machida in impressive fashion and was eventually tapped to fight the middleweight champ on December 12th.

Souza, meanwhile, has been rescheduled Romero at UFC 194. While speaking to the media recently in Brazil, the grappling titan made it clear that he still thinks it should be him fighting Weidman, and not Rockhold (quote via MMA Fighting.com):

“Absolutely. He absolutely leapfrogged me, he shouldn’t be next,” Souza said. “It should be me. It’s about time, my friend. I have this tough fight ahead of me. I won’t be a hypocrite to say it’s going to be an easy fight. I’m ready for a tough war, I’m ready to fight three rounds and suffer, but I’m ready to win.”

The reason Souza believes he should have been tapped to fight Weidman is because he’s won eight straight scraps, while Rockhold was taken out by Vitor Belfort in 2013. But, Rockhold has scored four highlight reel finishes in a row, and all the buzz tied to that, got him his shot.

UFC 194 will take place in Las Vegas and in the main event, featherweight champ Jose Aldo will take on interim champ, Conor McGregor.
