Ben Rothwell has been campaigning for a big name fight, and the heavyweight contender has received his wish.
Ever since Rothwell’s scheduled bout with Stipe Miocic in October fell through, after the latter withdrew due to injury, the massive fighter has been calling for high stakes fight. Well, the UFC has confirmed that Rothwell will throw down with Josh Barnett on January 30th at UFC on FOX 18.
Now, Barnett isn’t ranked as high as the #3 positioned Miocic, but he is sitting in the #6 spot. He’s also one of the most accomplished heavyweights in MMA history. Most recently, “The Warmaster” decisioned Roy Nelson in September, after Barnett was knocked out by Travis Browne in 2013.
Rothwell has moved into the #8 ranking thanks to a three fight winning streak, which includes wins over Brandon Vera, Alistair Overeem and Matt Mitrione.
UFC on FOX 18 will take place in Newark, New Jersey. The headliner will feature Anthony Johnson taking on fellow light-heavyweight contender Ryan Bader.
