Bisping-Hamill Rematch Likely To Take Place at UFC 79

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Sep 26, 2007 at 7:00 am ET11 Comments

In a recent update Matt Hamill has provided an update on his recent successful knee surgery and a possible rematch with Michael Bisping at UFC 79 in December. Here’s an except from the update:

“While training for UFC 75 I developed a knee issue. My knee would lock up whenever I bent it past parallel. I was able to work through it and wanted to wait until after UFC 75 was over to get it taken care of. The day after I returned from UFC 75 I had a consultation with one of the best orthopedic surgeon’s in the country. I was diagnosed with a partially torn meniscus. I am happy to say that on 9/20/07, I underwent successful arthroscopic surgery to remove the torn piece of the meniscus. I am feeling better already and began my 2 to 3 weeks of rehab before going back to full time training.

The UFC did offer the rematch in November which I would love to take, however it’s just too close and I don’t want to rush it. I did tell the UFC that I would be ready by late December and would love to do it in Vegas on 12/29 [at UFC 79].”

Wow, the December card is looking amazing. There are so many good fights that might potentially happen at UFC 79. The possibility of two title fights is cool, but to have this match, too is awesome. Also with the rumor of Kongo fighting Minotauro is another very good fight. Hamill should win the rematch. Hopefully the fight doesn’t go to a decision. This PPV card should be called “Stacked Part Two”.

  • Mr T says:

Well Christmas is certainly coming early with all these great fight rumours, im glad this fight will go ahead as as a Brit I was disgusted at the last fight descision. time to put the score right for Hamill, but saying that if the fight goes ahead I see it going the distance again with Hamill this time winning the decision, lining up for a Bisping/ Hamill 3. hehe

  • SCOTCHYDOW says:

I think Dana White probablly crawled up Bisbing’s ASS about the way he fought and acted in their last fight. I hope to see a different “Count” this go around. And, hopefully Hammil is still working hard at his game. This could turn out to be a GREAT REMATCH.

  • Kris says:

I am really hoping they reconsider this and either have this fight headline its own UFC Fight Night or be a co-main event with Huerta-Guida at the TUF 6 Finale.

  • SCOTCHYDOW says:

Kris, did you say Huerta/Guida. Man, that even sounds like a ledgendary match when you say it outloud. Whoever wins should get a shot at the title. I didn’t even hear about it. I have been sick and out of it, but that should be great.

    • Kris says:

I sure did. Rumor broke a few takes back about the match and it appears likely to headline the TUF 6 Finale.

    • Johnny says:

      1. Huerta/Guida would be seriously legendary – one of those dream matches I’d kill to see live. Never really thought about it before since Huerta’s been on the rise and Guida’s been on a slow decline (but I still love him).

      2. They need to unclutter UFC 79. Its great they have so many phenomenal fights lined up, but the way UFC 78 looks as of now, they should toss a couple fights back that way.

    • Kris says:

I couldn’t agree more. Right now it looks like UFC 78 could be headlined by Rashad-Tito II. Nothing against that fight since it has about as much title implications as Liddell-Jardine but it just isn’t a main event caliber fight.

Meanwhile UFC 79 has Serra-Hughes, Liddell-Rua, Nog-Kongo, Penn-Stevenson, and Wanderlei Silva and Josh Koscheck. That card is stacked and it’s only September. Of course some of those fights/fighters could get move around but I think something is bound to change with regards to both events. My personal vote would be to move Wanderlei to UFC 78 but that’s just personal speculation.

      • SCOTCHYDOW says:

I thought “Wandi” made it clear he wanted to fight as late as possible. I would think yhat they have to have something big in the works for 78. They are just keeping it quiet(maybe because of a contract issue) They do need something big, and maybe it’s Fedor, or maybe like I said before it is the HBO deal. That would be the perfect show to bring Fedor in, then get his TITLE FIGHT, at the beginning of next year. Maybe they have someone readdy for Arlovski. SO MANY MAYBES.

  • MrRee says:

I hope Bisping grabs Hamill in a bear hug and lifts him up to slam him and as he is about to drop him Matt boxes both of the Count’s ears at the same time. This will make Bisping deaf temporarily and off balance. That would give him a taste of what it is like to be Hamill. On a more serious note Hamill will destroy him in the first round this time.

  • Kris says:

Out of what you listed Arlovski is the most likely. Wanderlei moving up to this card is wishful thinking. Fedor has a Sambo fight this fall and will be unavailable. Making it available on HBI is possible though some places are taking pre-orders for it as a PPV. We’ll see…
