Khabib Nurmagomedov and his galaxy class grappling game will be returning to the Octagon after all, as according to a new report, the lightweight will not be hanging up the gloves…
If you follow “The Eagle”, then you know that recently he had to pull out of a December 11th fight with Tony Ferguson due to a rib injury. It was the latest setback to hit Nurmagomedov, as the 27 year-old has gone down with two knee injuries since he decisioned Rafael dos Anjos in April, 2014.
Nurmagomedov was pretty upset about this latest injury, understandably, and he said he wasn’t sure if he’d fight again. Then, a few days ago, he said his father, renowned coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, would decide whether the lightweight would keep fighting.
Well, in the latest episode of “UFC Tonight”, the show’s correspondent Ariel Helwani reported that Nurmagomedov has received the go head from his Dad (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):
“I spoke to him. He’s decided against retirement. His time wasn’t now. His father is the boss. He said, ‘once you get the gold, you can decide.’ Khabib said fighting is in my blood. He’s going to relax for a while then hopefully get back for the Super Bowl fight.”
This is awesome news. While Nurmagomedov may not be a fan favorite with the ‘just stand-and-bang’ crew, there’s no question he’s one of the best 155érs on the planet. If he had decided to hang it up, having not made another title shot run, it would have been pretty unfortunate.
It will be interesting to see, however, how Nurmagomedov looks when he returns. He will have been out nearly two years when he fights again.
