Khabib Nurmagomedov maybe the only man to defeat Rafael dos Anjos since 2011, but the lightweight champ says he hopes the vaunted grappler decides to keep fighting, following his latest setback.
Recently it was announced that Nurmagomedov has pulled out of a scheduled fight with Tony Ferguson next month, due to a rib injury. This has occurred after Nurmagomedov has injured his knee twice in the last year, and as a result, he hasn’t fought since April 19th, 2014. On that night, the undefeated fighter decisioned dos Anjos.
Well, Nurmagomedov has said on a couple of occasions now that he’s not sure if he’ll fight again, but RDA obviously doesn’t want that to be the case. Recently the champion appeared on “Submission Radio“, and while discussing Nurmagomedov, here is some of what RDA had to say (quotes via Bloody Elbow.com):
“I feel bad for him,” dos Anjos said. “He’s a young guy. I want him to recover because I want to fight him again. That’s my will. But I feel bad for him. He’s a young guy, and I really don’t wish anything bad for my opponents. I want them all [to be] the best…
“No [it wouldn’t] disappoint me, I just feel bad for him. Like, [if the] guy’s gonna retire – I think he’s 25 or 26 – and gonna retire at that age, undefeated record, he’s gonna retire at 25 years old? But I think he’s just mad right now, you know, just sad for a while. But once he recovers 100 percent, he’s going to come back to fight. I think so.”
Dos Anjos isn’t the only person who a) hopes Nurmagomedov keeps fighting and b), believes he’s probably just upset and will ultimately elect to return. Let’s hope so. It would be a travesty if he elected to call it quits having never fought for the title.
RDA, meanwhile, is scheduled to fight Donald Cerrone at UFC on FOX 17 on December 19th.
