UFC 193: Freddie Roach Evaluates Ronda Rousey’s Boxing, Says Champ Will “Destroy” Holly Holm on The Ground

Freddie Roach believes this weekend’s UFC 193 between Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm could be competitive, provided the headlining bout doesn’t hit the ground…

If you follow boxing at all, then you know that Roach is one of the best coaches in the game. Holm, of course, was a ridiculously decorated boxer before she moved into MMA, which is why her new career has been so highly touted.

Rousey, on the other hand, brought a world class grappling game into MMA, and has worked extensively on her hands since. So much so, her striking has drawn widespread praise, and Rousey has said she’d love to box professionally at some point.

Recently Roach appeared on the latest edition of “The MMA Hour”, and since he knows a thing or two about the sweet science, he was asked to weigh-on that aspect of Rousey-Holm. Here is some of what he had to say (quotes via MMA Fighting.com):

“[Rousey’s] not the best in the world [at boxing], but she’s good, she’s very competitive, she tries really hard,” said Roach. “It’s probably not the best thing she does, she probably better at ground game, but again, she’s more experienced there. Her boxing is good, the girl she’s fighting is a good boxer also. When they stand up it will be a good fight but when it goes to the ground she’s going to destroy her.”

Now sure, pretty much everyone under the sun believes that Rousey will have a massive advantage if and when the bout hits the floor. But it’s interesting to hear Roach acknowledge this, and further, he didn’t say Rousey will be in over her head striking with Holm.

The big question is, how long will it be before Rousey looks to take Holm down?

UFC 193 will be hosted by the Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia, and will air here in North America on November 14th.
