UFC 78: Karo Parisan vs. Hector Lombard

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Sep 24, 2007 at 11:55 am ET31 Comments

Karo Parisyan will return to the octagon in November at UFC 78 in New Jersey to take on UFC newcomer Hector Lombard, MMAFrenzy.com has confirmed with Parisyan’s manager.

Parisyan will be leaving tomorrow for Las Vegas to train with Xtreme Couture and UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture to prepare for the bout.

Regarded as one of the best welterweight fighters in the world, Parisyan has compiled a 25-4 MMA record. Using a modified form of judo, he has racked up wins in the UFC. He was victorious in his UFC debut, defeating Dave Strasser but lost his next fight at the hands of Georges St. Pierre. After defeating Shonie Carter at WEC 10 Parisyan returned to the UFC and appeared better than ever in victories over Nick Diaz, Chris Lytle, Matt Serra, and Nick Thompson.

He was handed his second UFC loss in December of 2006 when he was defeated by Diego Sanchez via unanimous decision. He has since bounced back from the loss with unanimous decision victories over Drew Fickett and Josh Burkman. Should the wins continue it is expected that Parisyan will fight for the UFC Welterweight Championship sometime in 2008.

Lombard will enter the octagon with an 11-2-1 MMA record. He has fought with a variety of promotions including PRIDE. In his two PRIDE fights, Bushido events in 2006, Lombard was defeated by Akihiro Gono and Gegard Mousasi. Since then he has strung together 5 straight wins at DEEP, Oceania Fighting Championships, and Warriors Realm events. He fought to a draw against Kyle Noke in his last MMA bout in July.

Happy that the UFC is coming to jersey. i’ll be there. It seems that they will move the lightweight title bout to UFC 79. Now they won’t be a title involve in UFC 78. Hope they come up with a big main event for this event. i don’t think TITO VS EVANS 2 is a main event caliber match.

  • Johnny says:

Is it just me or does this Nov fight card look like a regular Spike Fight Night? Other than the Tito/Rashad fight, we’ve got Karo, Ed Herman, Joe Lauzon, and Frankie Edgar. Great fighers all, but a little underwhelming for the first UFC event on the East Coast(I think?). You’d think they’d put together something massive for an event that’s a 20 minute drive from New York City. Are they yet to announce a larger main event(s) or what?

  • steve24 says:

This fight card is horrible especially since Penn has been removed from it. Karo Parisyan fighting somebody making their UFC debut. Makes no sense!!

  • Red says:

I’m happy to see Parisyan back in the Octagon. I would have loved to see him fight Koscheck at UFC 79. Now I wonder who Koscheck will fight next?

    • mikey says:

I was looking foward to seeing Parisyan destroy Koscheck too. I guess Kos will have to Face Fitch now. Or what should happen is Fitch vs GSP, with the winner getting whichever Matt wins. I would like to see Sakurai in there somewhere too, maybe Kos.

  • Kris says:

Aside from being teammates I think Kos vs. Fitch makes the most sense but I don’t know if they’re willing to fight eachother.

I didn’t want to criticize the Parisyan-Lombard matchup in the article but I really expected a better matchup for Parisyan. Considering he’s expected to get a title shot in ‘08 I didn’t think he’d face a UFC newcomer. Nothing against Lombard but he’s just not the sort of fighter I expected him to face at UFC 78.

  • MCG says:

Kos and Fitch will not fight each other, or Mike Swick when he moves down. Karo fighting a newb is a joke. He should fight Kos.

    • Kris says:

I don’t think they’ll fight eachother either but if they don’t who should they fight. They are the biggest names in WW-contention right now and with Parisyan fighting at 78 against Lombard few other fights make sense. It really makes you look at friendships in MMA more closely when they affect a match that makes the most sense for the division.

  • MrRee says:

    Karo gets tossed a bone.

  • FixXxeR says:

I wanna see Karo and Hughes pretty bad… I hope it happens. I dislike Karo after his apperance on TUF5. His words “does he know who the f*** I am, who does he think he is”? when he was fighting with Nate Diaz kind of sums up that he thinks to highly of himself. He is a helluva fighter though….he needs to get some quality caliber fights in. GSP or Hughes vs Karo would be good. Like Hughes says..I dont think Serra is in the top 5 of welterweights.

    • MrRee says:

You don’t think Serra is in the top 5? You do know that he beat GSP for the title of best in that division in his most recent fight don’t you? Do championship belts mean anything to you? I agree with you about Karo. I like his judo skills but he’s a bully with his mouth.

  • FixXxeR says:

Serra got lucky against GSP. GSP looked like ****. Yes Serra is not in the top 5. Look at his wins against fighters.

    Wins:
    GSP
    Chris Lytle
    Ivan Menjivar
    Jeff Curran
    Kelly Dullanty
    Yves Edwards
    Greg Melisi
    Jeff Telvi
    Graham Lewis

Chris Lytle and GSP are the only 2 decent fighters in that list. (whoever says Yves is…yeah)

    Loses:
    Karo Parisyan
    Din Thomas
    B.J. Penn
    Shonie Carter

I give BJ and Karo as understandable loses if your a good fighter.

You have to agree Serra would not have come close to getting a title shot if it wasnt for TUF.

    • SCOTCHYDOW says:

Serra kicked GSP’s ass. I think Serra would have kicked anybodys ass you would have put in front of him that night. I really don’t think there are any lucky wins (other than fights like Din Thomas vs. Kenny Florian, or Manny Gamburian vs. Nate Diaz where there is a freak injury, and no real fight takes place). I don’t think Serra will hold the belt very long, but he has a very good shot at beating Hughes. He is in the top 5 of the world right now because he beat the # 1 fighter in the world. He might not be there very long, but deal with it til somebody takes him out.

      • KenDog says:

Serra displayed his absolute best that dreadful night. It will never happen again.Come on, really, WHO has he beat??? He rose to the occasion, got his belt, now it’s over for him. Bye-bye.

  • Napoa says:

This fight card does suck it looks alot like fightnight/ UFC 70 nations colidei think rashad vs. tito is a great fight very close to call but i don’t think it is a main event fight, GSP vs Jon Fitch would be a good fight probably to name the #1 contender but i think GSP would win cause he has the camps number allready beating koschek

  • Mr T says:

Glad to see Karo back in the Octagon, it seams ages since we last saw him, I agree with most comments on here regarding the fight card it is a little lame, but lets face it at least these events are regular and were not having to wait months before we get our UFC fix, I for one love the fact that they are so regular.

  • belly says:

i agree with mr t its great to have regular events but hope they dont start to lose quality! great karo is back he is a hard match up for anyone!

  • Armenian says:

Karo wins by however he wants and whenever he wants.total destruction.War Karo.lav parapi Kar jan. quni dra maman.YEREVAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Professor X says:

Matt Serra is not top 5. If he beats Matt Hughes, he will be but until then, he would be lucky to make the top 10.

I agree with FixXxer’s comments completely about Karo. Great, exciting fighter but is an ass and thinks he is the shiznit. He lost a lot of points in my book with the way he acted on TUF 5.

  • po says:

Yea I really hope theres another big fight added to that… because its really cheap so far, i dont even wanna see the tito fight. The ufc 79 in december in another hand is fk’n stacked, liddel vs rua minotauro kongo, bj, serra hughes, and a whole bunch more that are just insane

  • Pete T. says:

    NJ is a s@!thole!!

  • Sandro says:

Gentlemen , I really respect your opinions and I think that under no circumstances a fighter should be judged for his attitude outside the octagon , What really matters in a fighter is if he’s able to put a show worth to watch and Karo Parysian fights are definitely worth it because of his unstoppable aggression and unusual takedowns and methods , But this fightcard isn’t about Karo and it ain’t about Hector either , This match is made for us ( the fans ) Since they are both from a Judo base this match should be very interesting , I really support this UFC strategy on making even matches ( Or haven’t you seen for example a really good striker who can’t even fight because the stupid wrestler is just going for his legs over and over again ) If you consider that a good fight you have a very poor sense of entertainment , So please try to understand , And for all Karo sympathizers Don’t think this match is unfair since Hector is at a Judo level that Karo would only dream of , And he is also a better striker , His only weakness against Karo will be the Battle for controlling the nerves which is devastating for people who fight in the UFC for the first time , So let’s see what happens , Just please don’t be saying something stupid like this is a bad match , Thanks for reading

  • Sam says:

Don any body watches Hactors fights? I think Hactor is wary good.
    That’s whit I think anyway.

  • AK47 says:

Hector is a good fighter… but Karo is definitely going to take this fight… Karo is unstoppable

  • po says:

I wouldnt mind seeing Karo geting his ass beat.

  • Kris says:

The only reasons they won’t do that match is because GSP is unlikely to fight again before his title fight. Basically the bout with Kos was for a title shot is his next fight. They wouldn’t want to risk a loss either as GSP is more well known than Fitch right now.

  • SCOTCHYDOW says:

GSP is a pretty LARGE name and Serra beat him down!
