Recently Khabib Nurmagomedov turned heads by relaying he isn’t sure if he’ll continue fighting, and it looks like the vaunted grappler is indeed seriously considering retirement.

Nurmagomedov was scheduled to fight Tony Ferguson at the TUF 22 Finale next month, which would have marked the first time he had fought since April, 2014, when he decisioned lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos. “The Eagle” had been sidelined for months due to knee injury, and then more recently, a broken rib forced him to pull out of the TUF 22 Finale.

After he was forced to withdraw, Nurmagomedov reported that he wasn’t certain if he’d fight again. Now, in a more recent Instagram post, the 27 year-old said this:

“My father plays a very big role in my life and almost all major decisions I made only after consulting with him, I will fight or not depends only on God and on the opinion of my dad, if he tells me – I’m done! but he doesn’t think about this. Blessing of the parents is the most important thing.”

The fighter’s father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, is a renowned martial arts coach, and helped build Khabib into one of the planet’s best 155érs. So, you can understand why he would listen to his Pop.

Here’s hoping, however, that Mr. Nurmagomedov advises the lightweight contender to continue fighting. This is a man who has never been defeated in pro MMA, and has pretty much walked through all the opposition he’s faced in the Octagon. To not see him fight again would be a massive shame.
