UFC Chatter: Diego Sanchez Considering Dropping to 155

“I feel that he beat me fair and square. I was close, but close isn’t close enough. All fighters go through losses, I’m just going to have to come back stronger. I’m contemplating in my mind if I’m going to drop to (1)55 or not, because I’m a smaller welterweight. I could do more powerlifting and put some more weight on or I could lose some weight.”
– UFC welterweight Diego Sanchez discusses the possibility of dropping down to the UFC lightweight division following his split decision loss to Jon Fitch at UFC 76.

I think if Diego goes down to Lightweight; he would easily be a top five Lightweight. I think that he got discorages with his lack of strength against Fitch and maybe he even got discouraged about his lack of strength against Koscheck. What Diego has to keep in mind is that Koscheck and Fitch are one of the biggest welterweight fighters in the world, especially Fitch. I never realized how big of a Welterweight Fitch was. In the staredown; Diego looked much smaller than Fitch. I wouldn’t mind seeing Diego at Lightweight; then maybe we can see Penn vs. Sanchez. Also, I wouldn’t mind seeing Florian vs. Sanchez II.
I think a move to LW makes sense. Both divisions have a big crop of good fighters but the WW division is backed up while there are no clear front runners in LW. That said, Sanchez would need to win at least two fights before he could earn a title shot but that is far quicker than he could receive one at WW with Kos, Fitch, GSP, Parisyan, and Hughes all ahead of him.
I agree with your assessment Kris. A move to Lightweight would make Diego one of the bigger fighters in that division. You make a great point in which there is no clear cut fighters that are front runners in the Lightweight division; due to that, maybe Diego can jump ahead of a few of the top 155 pound fighters with a win or two over big names in that division. I am not a fan of Diego, but I do think he is a terrific fighter. I am curious to see how this situation develops.
Yes Diego! Please go to LW!!! He would be pretty dominate in my opinion. We need a dominate figure in that weight class. Just go there and beat Nate Diaz up…I cant stand that guy.
Well thats 2 defeats now for Diego and to be honest he looked to me to be over powered by the bigger Fitch, in my opinion the right decision for Diego at this stage would be to drop to 155 he then in my opinion would dominate the weight class.
Perhaps he should consult the spirits of the forest or consult the mountain god Golgamax?
Maybe even light a candle or two…
One thing’s for sure, it’s quite amusing to see how a couple of losses can change his tune from “I’m unbeatable and destined to go undefeated” to the cringing “I’m a smaller welterweight.”
Diego needs to drop to 155.
I had this exact thought during th Sanchez/Fitch staredown right before the fight. Sanchez looked tiny.
Diego would be great at 155.
I always wondered how a matchup with Stevenson would go. Maybe we’ll get to see it now.
Well, his ego has certainly dropped a weight class. I think he would be weakened by weight loss in the lightweight division. The natural lightweights would dominate him. He better take a lightweight lightweight for his first match.
FixXer your and idiot he so would not dominate because there are so many guys in that division that could be him. I think Kenny Florian could possibly beat him even though he lost to Diego in the finale. Spencer Fisher could easly knock him the f*** out. Hermes Franca could upset him and so could Nate Diaz. Oh and Sean Sherk would give him a brutal rapping
Thats if Sean Sherk doesn’t get a lengthy Ban if he is accused of steroid abuse!!!
Sorry Mr. T but Sherk has already been accused of Steroids. And what would he do anyways if they fought. Lay on him? I don’t think he could hold Sanchez down.
ya i think that diego needs to be a lightweight because of his lack in size. You have to be at least about 5′ 10″ to be a welterweight or be a freak of nature like matt hughes. Im from albuquerque and we need a champion to come to our city.
DIEGO IS THE BEST FIGHTER IN THE WORLD.
