Due to Joanne Calderwood going down with an injury, Paige VanZant will face the higher ranked Rose Namajunas next, and the latter’s looking forward to providing a stiff test.
VanZant and Namajunas are set to fight in the main event of UFC Fight Night 80, which will take place on December 10th in Las Vegas. The bout will match the strawweight division’s #6th ranked fight in VanZant, against the #3 positioned Namajunas.
Recently “Thug” spoke to FOX Sports.com, and while discussing whether she believes VanZant has really been tested to date, Namajunas stated:
“So to me, I view her as a high-level opponent even though there’s a lot of criticism around saying she’s kind of like brought up slowly and all that. I think it’s a very natural progression the way that we’ve matched up right now.”
“So I think that’s the test that everybody has been waiting for,” added Namajunas, after noting that she believes PVZ has been brought up at an appropriate rate. “I think she’s been waiting for [it] as well. I’m more than willing to bring it to her.”
It’s going to be really interesting to see what goes down in the bout, especially since both women are two of the fastest rising stars in the 115 division.
PVZ has gone 3-0 in the UFC to date, while Namajunas competed in TUF 20, and advanced to the finals against Carla Esparza. The 23 year-old lost that bout via submission, but rebounded this past October by tapping out Alex Chambers.
In the card’s co-headliner, Michael Chiesa will take on veteran contender, Jim Miller.
