Marcus “Big Baby” Jones, a former NFL player and semifinalist on The Ultimate Fighter 10, has retired from mixed martial arts following his loss to Matt Mitrione on December 5 at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale, according to Around the Octagon.
Jones took out fellow heavyweights Mike Wessel and Darrill Schoonover to advance to the TUF 10 semis, but next suffered a first-round knockout at the hands of Brendan Schaub. Jones returned to action earlier this month, but was knocked out by Mitrione in the second-round.
Jones ends his MMA career with a 4-2 record.

that sucks, he had so much potential and skill on the ground, im positive if he stayed in there and went to a good camp and learned some actual stand up he wouldnt want to retire actually would be a force in the heavyweight division
i really liked marcus, but i feel like even if he learned some semblance of stand-up, he still had that suspect chin that would let him down.
This does suck but, combined with Urban Meyer’s resignation from Florida, renews my faith in high profile athletes’ and coaches’ ability to remember that there is life beyond sport and that sometimes one’s health needs to come first.
I guess he feels that two solid KOs in as many months, at his age, is enough. While I did want to see him in the HW division, I applaud him.
Ditto.
The guy also talked about his family not needing to see him get knocked out on national TV. The guy IMO deserves a lot of credit and respect for putting things in perspective, and walking away from MMA before he gets carried out of the cage after another KO loss…
sad to see him leave.. he could have been great.. god bless marcus and good luck doing whatever you do now
Good idea, with that weak ass chin he would have been knocked out by the entire heavyweight roster!
:( x2
He may not had the skill but indeed had the heart to become a great fighter
Really? Heart = quitting after a couple fights?
I would say he didnt have the heart or the skill. If he had the heart, he could have trained a few more years and the skill might have followed.
that sucks he was the only good thing about tuf 10
good choice he couldn’t punch and couldn’t take a hit, plus i dont think he had the right mind to be a fighter, nice guy tho every1 seems to like him he could become the new goldy ha
I had been following his fights since the first time he was on Bubba the Love Sponge a couple years ago, disappointed to see him retire but even in radio interviews he always implied that he wanted a simple private life and its nice to see someone not get forced out of the spotlight. He got out of football before any temporary damage was done and apparently is doing the same this time. He learned all his jiujitsu from Rob Kahn at Gracie Tampa, so while his ground game would always be solid, his standup has been shown to be lacking and I think it would have been his demise in every fight moving forward.
If he doesn’t want to fight – see ya later! I don’t want to watch anyone who doesn’t want to fight, even though his ground game is pretty good.
I’m glad he is retiring… Honestly, Ive never felt so bad for someone before as they step in to fight! He just always looked scared.. his nickname def fit him! When he got beat, I felt sorry for the guy… which is weird in this sport because you usually cheer for someone to get KO’d… but for him.. I always wanted him to not get hurt! Ha.. pathetic of me, but just saying….
The guy has a good heart, it’s not pathetic realising that dude!
You knew it wouldn’t last when he wanted to quit on the show after losing.. I was excited to see him come back for the finale in hopes that he scored a good camp but you knew after his first loss he wouldn’t want to fight anymore
It’s a real loss for not just the UFC but all of Mixed Martial Arts; indeed, an articulate, thoughtful, hardworking ambassador of everything really honorable about this sport has been lost. MMA needs more men like Marcus Jones.
That’s really a shame… his BJJ was great but his chin let him down. Maybe he could get into some ADCC submission grappling competition?
