Joseph Duffy is on the cusp of becoming a significant star for the UFC, and clearly the promotion’s boss man, Dana White, understands why.
Yes, one could certainly argue that Duffy is already a major player in the UFC, as he is scheduled to fight Dustin Poirier in the headliner of UFC Fight Night 76. But, the card is taking place in Duffy’s native Ireland, so, chances are he wouldn’t be headlining just yet here in North America. In addition, Duffy isn’t a top 15 ranked lightweight as it stands, but that could change after this Saturday’s bout.
Since Duffy is also the last man to defeat Conor McGregor, the UFC has a pretty nice backstory going to help promote “Irish Joe”. Recently Dana White spoke to UFC.com about Duffy, and the promotion’s president heaped praise on the former pro-boxer.
“I don’t even point to Duffy beating Conor because they fought a long time ago when they were younger,” White said. “I look at Duffy now. Duffy today is a well-rounded, explosive finisher – a guy whose stand up is literally perfect.”
“This is a really good test for Duffy because Dustin Poirier looks great at 155,” White said. “He said he feels stronger, healthier, and he’s been on a tear at 155. It’s a big fight for both guys.”
This is true. Poirier has been awesome since he moved up from featherweight to lightweight, which is why this Saturday’s scrap is so compelling. If Poirier wins, it will be his third straight victory since he was stopped by the aforementioned McGregor last September.
UFC FN 76 will be hosted by Dublin’s 3 Arena. In the co-headliner, Patrick Holohan will take on Louis Smolka (which should also be fantastic).
