Myles Jury will make his featherweight debut at UFC on FOX 17, and clearly the former lightweight contender is expecting to have a pretty, pretty memorable run at 145.
Earlier this year, Jury raised more than a few eyebrows throughout MMA, by announcing he was moving down to featherweight. Jury was coming off a decision loss to Donald Cerrone in January, but considering it was his first, official pro loss, no one was calling on “Fury” to change things up. Furthermore, Jury had won his first six, UFC bouts, and was an emerging contender at 155.
Well, obviously, Jury felt differently, and on December 19th he’ll take on featherweight contender, Charles Oliveira. Recently the 26 year-old spoke with MMA Fighting.com, and Jury had this to say about the drop to 45:
“I was hell on wheels at 155,” Jury said. “At , nobody is gonna beat me. I just want to get this first fight, get the cut down and go through that process. After that, I’ll be able to take on anybody.”
“… if I get another advantage going into war on my side, that just increases my odds of winning. And that’s what I want to do. I feel really good about the decision.”
It’s going to be interesting to see how Jury looks, and obviously he’s been granted the opportunity to jump right into the title shot mix at featherweight. Oliveira is currently ranked #7, so if Jury can score a decisive win over “do Bronx”, he could leap into the top ten ranks.
Oliveira will be competing for the first time since his unfortunate, stoppage loss due to a throat injury, versus Max Holloway. That fight took place in August.
UFC on FOX 17 will go down in Orlando, Florida, and in the main event, the aforementioned Cerrone will take on ligtweight champ, Rafael dos Anjos.
