Benson Henderson Praises Robbie Lawler, Wants to Find Out Who Has “Bigger Heart”

Benson Henderson will have to win a few more fights at 170 yet, but the former lightweight champ hopes to test himself against champion Robbie Lawler at some juncture.

Henderson is scheduled to fight perennial, contender Thiago Alves on November 28th. “Smooth” has been booked for the assignment, after he agreed to face Brandon Thatch on short notice this past February, and submitted the powerful welterweight.

Recently Henderson spoke to UFC.com about the upcoming fight, as well as his move to 170. During the interview, the well rounded fighter weighed in on Lawler ,and his stoppage win over Rory MacDonald this past July. Here is what Henderson had to say:

“I think he has a great heart, an amazing skill set and cement bricks in his hands. He has all of those weapons, but what impresses me the most is the heart the man has. I think I have the best heart in MMA, but I had to question myself when I saw what Lawler did in that fight. I’d love to find out. I have to do the work to get to that title shot, but hard work isn’t anything I’ve ever shied away from. I’ll give my best to climb the ladder and get to a title opportunity, but I’m doing so because I want to find out if I have more heart than Robbie Lawler has.”

Hard to argue with Henderson here, and it would be interesting to see how he would do against the heavy handed champ. Of course, Henderson has a lot of work to do before that happens.

Currently Alves is ranked #13 in the welterweight division, and if Henderson defeats him at UFC Fight Night 79, then a bout with a top ten contender would likely come next.

Lawler, meanwhile, is scheduled to fight Carlos Condit on January 2nd at UFC 195. Alves lost via TKO to Condit, due to doctor stoppage, in his last scrap.

UFC FN 79 will mark the first time the promotion has held an event in South Korea. The card will be hosted by Seoul’s Olympic Gymnastics Arena.
