Daniel Cormier has repeatedly said he wants to avenge his loss to Jon Jones, but now the light-heavyweight champ has relayed he wants to face his rival two more times…
Cormier worked his way to a split decision win over Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 192 on Saturday, and in doing so, likely cleared the way for a rematch with Jones. Recently it was announced that latter will not do any jail time, following his arrest earlier this year, and many believe Cormier-Jones II could be right around the corner.
“DC” appeared on “The MMA Hour” recently to discuss his win on Saturday, and not surprisingly, he was asked about Mr. Jones. While discussing the former champ, Cormier relayed the following (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“So I’ll wait until my body starts to feel better and I feel good to know. But I know that I’ve got at least two fights that I have to have before I would ever retire anyways, so it’s no good. The next fight, when I beat Jones. And then that third fight when him and I fight again. Jones and I will fight twice again, so until him and I fight two more times, I’m not going anywhere.”
Interesting no? Jones decisioned Cormier in January, and in doing so, handed the latter his first pro loss. If Cormier was able to defeat Jones, then chances are, the UFC would want to go with a rubber match any ways, considering “Bones” is the greatest 205ér ever. It would also a ridiculously huge fight, and as we all know, money talks.
It remains to be seen when Jones will make his return. The UFC says they are looking into the situation and have not made any commitments, in terms of when or if Jones will be reinstated. Chances are, however, we’ll here something within a few weeks.
UFC 192 went down at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Cormier won the vacant title in May by submitting Anthony Johnson.
