UFC 107 Results and Recap: Penn Dominates Sanchez to Retain Title, Mir and Florian Also Victorious

BJ PennUFC lightweight champion BJ Penn dominated challenger Diego Sanchez from start to finish on Saturday in the main event of UFC 107 in Memphis, Tennessee, dropping Sanchez in the opening seconds of the fight and bludgeoning him with superior boxing throughout the bout before ultimately opening up a fight-ending gash in the fifth round to retain the 155-pound title.

In the UFC 107 co-headliner, heavyweight Frank Mir rebounded from a July loss to Brock Lesnar and got back into title contention by making quick work of Cheick Kongo, knocking him down in the opening minute then putting him to sleep with a guillotine choke just 72-seconds into the matchup.

Welterweight contender Jon Fitch remained in the mix at 170-pounds but went the distance for his sixth-straight fight, topping Mike Pierce with 29-28 scores across the board for his third-straight victory.

Kenny Florian forced Clay Guida to submit to a rear naked choke in the second round at UFC 107, bouncing back from an August loss to Penn to join a handful of contenders in the muddled lightweight division, while heavyweight Stefan Struve picked up his third-straight win by topping Paul Buentello by majority decision to kick of the event’s main card.

On the UFC 107 preliminary card, Alan Belcher, Matt Wiman, Johny Hendricks, Rousimar Palhares, DaMarques Johnson, and T.J. Grant were all victorious.

all around it was a very good fight card, entertaining fights, lot of toe to toe in the main event really liked that

  • AngleVSLesnar says:

wait did u watch it? theres no way you did. it was so boring i cant believe i payed 50 bucks, i learned my lesson never pay unless brock is fighting, by the way please dont put mir against brock again mir will be killed again

    • dbiz says:

      Go back to your bridge.

      • bsbiz says:

        *sigh*

Another event, another round of b!tching about “lack of good fights.”

If you think they all suck, then don’t come back until/if Brock fights again.

      • john says:

yeah I agree, I thought the fights were great. Main event was awesome. The legend grows. Wonderful fighting by Bj.Great heart by Diego. Any Belcher fight is awesome. Mir,although I think he looked a little juiced,he had that upper stomach muscle you get from steroids, just my opinion, and tests are beatable, but he(Mir) looked incredible with very nice standup and a choke he pulled on pure strength cause he didnt have the best positioning.KOngo looked like he was ice skating(he wasnt moving well and Mir made him pay). The Buentello fight was very exciting, those 2 banged and that overhand to counter the flying knee is highlight reel stuff. Fitch and Pierce fought a very tough fight. And pierce proved he is an up in cominer even in losing he put a beating on Fitch and showed strong wrestling with his hard punches. TNA has Hogan back it starts at 11 enjoy and take your vitamins.

      • john says:

And I forgot how good Florian was as well.

    • George says:

Florian vs. Guida was good, Mir vs. Kongo was short and sweet, BJ vs. YES! man was kind of boring and one sided… yeah… not a card worth buying imo… but it had its moments…

      • muaythai4life says:

Seriously? So when it’s a great ground match then ppl complain about too much grappling, when it’s a good stand up match then ppl complain about too one sided of strikes? Sanchez has a good chin, what can you say? it was a great night of fights.

    • George says:

This wasn’t a good striking match. A good striking match is, e.g., Machida vs. Shogun. I watched that fight 5 times… I don’t consider one sided striking matches or one sided any kind of match interesting. Where’s the fun in that, unless it’s short, like the Mir match today.

Long drawn out one sided matches are boooooooooooooooring.

      • TC says:

BJ vs Sanchez was boring indeed. Not a single scratch on BJ’s face. Sanchez just sucked in this match. The face expressions that he was giving, I thought it will be a intense fight but it was so one sided.

    • Figs says:

AngleVSLesnar, your opinion is your opinion, but IMO I thought this was one of the top 3 cards of the entire year. All around great fights, everyone went for it so I’m not sure you watched. Also, IMO, Brock’s lay 280 lbs of muscle on guys and throw some punches is far from the most entertaining to see. Keep your 50 bucks and I’ll spend mine.

      • john says:

That guy thought the BJ fight was boring. What was boring about Bj dropping him with the 1st punch. Instantly taking Diego out of the fight and methodically breaking and slicing diego face until they had to stop it because BJ gave him a Hatchet Wound on his forehead. Angle Doesnt even fight and he eats 50 vicodin a day. The intense face he had made you think it would be good fight. Hey intense face guy, Fedor looks like he is playing with puppies by his facial expression. He would probably be even greater if he yelled yes over and over and flaired his nostrils and looked angry huh?

    • KSEcALAMITY says:

yeah did u amazing fights all around, penn dominant as usual, also like sanchez in this one got beat up bad but stayed in there my hat off to him

    • windmiller says:

it did suck!!!!!!!! no ddt’s, no chest slaps, no one got hit with any chairs, and no one had the balls to jump off the top turn buckle! this real crap sucks! i don’t know why i watch it? O yea i like to complain about stuff. now i remember :)

  • CBrown says:

Told everyone BJ would embarrass Sanchez

  • dickchainey says:

Mir Looked GREAT!! For 72 sec lol. I loved Bj fight also. Wish we could have saw the prelumes I would have like to have watched the Rousimar Palhares fight.

  • frantzfanon says:

On balance, the fights were very good. Fitch-Pierce didn’t heat up at all until the final 20 seconds.

B.J. looked great; Diego hung in there tough and has nothing to be ashamed about. Mir’s cardio is obviously still solid regardless of the extra 20 lbs. Kongo, my brother, you have to work on your ground skills.

I really wanted Guida to win but that was an entertaining fight; Kenflo is back in the saddle. For real fans that appreciate the fighting discipline that is Mixed Martial Arts, we saw tremendous skill displayed, and for me that will always be exciting (Brock or no Brock…).

    • George says:

Yeah, I don’t think I’m really an mma fan. I don’t know enough about BJJ, or wrestling, or whatever, to really appreciate the technical aspects of each fight. Nevertheless, I’ve learned a bunch from watching a lot of fights, and can appreciate the some of the technique that’s displayed in even the dullest of fights.

I guess I’m more interested in being entertained by the spectacle of mma — this includes good fights (exciting fights, even from no names), but also I really enjoy watching fighters who make names for themselves, fights that settle long-standing rivalries… and so on.

So, for me, I guess I enjoy entertaining and exciting fights, but I enjoy them more when there’s either a big name involved or some interesting rivalry… I like cheering on a personality as well as a fighter.

      • bsbiz says:

Honestly, everything I know about combat sports has been learned from wikipedia (learning what the holds are) and watching everything. You don’t have to have years of training to watch and enjoy. I go because it’s fun to watch, but also for the spectacle and hanging out with the guys. That’s about all there is.

  • Andrew says:

I have no idea what you guys were watching but it wasnt UFC 107. All these fights were entertaining. BJ fight might of been one sided but it was amazing Diego never went out. Fitch might not have been fighting a well named opponet but it was still good action throughout the fight. Mir fight didnt even happen but it was a WOW moment. Florian showed how is skill level is beyond Guida’s. Struve fight was exciting. Even the Belcher prelim fight they showed was real good, but of course they would show a good fight. If you had a problem with these fights then you probably shouldnt be watching.

  • jferrrzz says:

Bj proved he’s the best 155 by far. Guida vs kenflo for fight of the night def. diego had a hell of a chin and damn good endurance. more power to him for trying to keep “fighting”. kongo can’t really say much of the same. fitch was the least entertaining fight, thou very good ground game. the first fight was a good way to start off the night. not the best starting fight i’ve ever seen, but still, it was pretty exciting. the prelim card shown didn’t turn out half bad, we will see belcher in the main card in hte upcoming future prbbly, and hopefully with different hair…

  • Markus J says:

WOW! Weird thread… I don’t recognize any of the people posting, lol!

Personally, I thought this was one of the better UFC cards I’ve watched in a while….. Penn, Mir, Kenflo…. all impressed!

Aside from the typical snooze-fest we’ve come to expect from Jon Fitch, the rest of the televised events, main car or preliminary, were awesome!

haha…. I am going to have visions tonight of up-kicking someone in the face so that they fall perfectly into my triangle choke! =)

Great night of fights…. B.J. proved that he is top 3 in the world best P4P fighter….. Mir is the real deal and is one fight away from his rubber match with Lesnar and poor Kenflo despite an awesome showing will remain in limbo as he has nowhere to go in his division!!!

Great night! Joe Roggan, go back to your collared shirts with the gay designs…. tonight you looked extra “homo”ish! lol. PS…. love how Frank Mir “thanked” you last!!!! HILARIOUS SHIT!!!!

    • jiujitsuMAN says:

top3? really? you give him that much credit? id say top10 or even top5 but IMHO bj is not better then GSP A.Silva or fedor…

      • john says:

it was a great card and the fights were great and a lot of the fighters were contenders and up and comers. I guess only people that fight honestly know anything. That was a great card, Big names and great technique and skills displayed all night. Belcher(contender),Gouveia(fights hard),Florian(2title shots,high-ranked),Guida(Rudy Rudicker of MMA),Mir(Former champ, major contender),Kongo(Dangerous,Big, comes to fight),Fitch(1title shot, major contender),Pierce(up-incomer,shows great potential)Diego(TUF1champ,Valid#1contender) and BJ PENN, cleaned out weight -class,pound for pound 1of the best in the world. Held titles in 2 weight classes.BJJ world champ. Phenominal striker.Rarely bleads. Never even gets stunned. best takedown defense in MMA.Fought our 205b champ to a split decision, and now also onje of the best conditioned fighters. There is a card almost every 3 weeks at that pace its hard to please, but this card was loaded. YOu were hoping for a Royce Gracie Shamrock rematch werent ya.Maybe tank vs.Marco Ruas. Get with the times. These are the studs.

  • fr702 says:

Seriously everyone complaining don’t know shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the card wasn’t the greatest yet was Awesome…… Penn v Sanchez was simply practice realize that, Penn is the best eva @ 155, call him on it kid…………..

    • bigworthy says:

FR702 with ya on this one, what is with the B1tching on this thread.
Just finished watching the card for the second time and IMO it was sweet!

first fight, Stefan Struve god that kid got talent on the ground with thoughs long legs (even though the uneducated crowd was booing him). Paul Buentello nearly had a fedor vs arlovski moment, and in the end was a close match.

Second fight, clay (the cave man) guida got out classed by a Florian although as markus J say don’t know what he should do from here maybe a rematch with “The nightmare”.

Third fight, was IMO close and show that Mike Pierce has a lot of potential, Fitch did not impress.

Fourth fight, Mir showed he could back his mouth up (although IMO he was just stating facts ‘Go MIR’) with a massive over head left, plus a choke from hell (nice leg hook). This fight left me unsure about Kongos future in a well stacked heavyweight division.

fifth fight, Belcher and Gouveia stood toe2toe both landing massive shots but Belcher show his chin was better (respect to the pink).

Finally Penn vs. Diego (granite chin) Sanchez, Well only two things two say Penn is the King of the lightweight division, he has in my opinion the most well rounded P4P skills in the game (GSP no disrespect). Diego well back to the drawing board dude, but god that gut can take a beating. (be it the invisible bearded man in the sky looking on him or a granite chin super power).

job well done dana and the Fertitta brothers.

  • Jerod says:

Good solid card, no doubt about it.

It’s going to be tough sledding for a while now for #1 contenders in the UFC. The champs in each respective weight class are on a serious run of dominance. BJ pretty much discarded Diego and it almost looked easy and effortless. Diego even had a sort of defeated look on his face between rounds and that surprised me. And then to see BJ be first to the center of the cage each round was also very interesting. I think the first round was a real rude awakening for Diego.

Too bad we didn’t get to see Palhares’ heel-hook sighting. And I noticed Hendricks pulled off a 30-25 scorecard, don’t see that very often.

  • MuMMA says:

So who is next for BJ? Do you think Maynard’s wrestling, size and strength could pose some match up issues?

  • clown says:

I normally buy every fight but lately money has been getting kinda snug so i figured through description alone of the interviews and what I could find on youtube or what not I could kind of enjoy them. I picked a bad card to miss because all of the fights I would have enjoyed. I’m not getting this “i’m not gonna watch a fight till brock does” thing. mma fan or not those fights were sure to be good. If you want pure brutality or toe to toe scrap fights go to bumfights.com or something because im sure for 5 rounds 1 sided or not BJ and Sanchez are probably 2 of the better tech fighters out there. Sanchez’s hands aren’t awesome but he has his knockouts and its gotten alot crisper.

To the dudes that think a card like this could be boring.. thats insane I didn’t even watch it and I’m excited over the stats

  • RJA says:

Thats back to back awesome cards.I was thoroghly entertained from top to bottom.I figured bj would pull it off but wow!did he look good. His cardio was there the whole fight, timming was impecable and he just looked crisper than ever.I really thought diego would pressure him a little, guess not. He’ll be the LW champ as long as he wants to be.

  • Chris says:

Love Penn no matter who he faces in that weight class he will destroy them. GO PENN!!

  • MuMMA says:

I think Maynard may give him trouble if he can get through BJ’s jab. I do agree that it very well could be a repeat of last night – including “only a fleshwound”.

  • jpmm says:

I thought the card threw up some good fights and was a overall great event. I thought the Buenatello/Struve fight was unlucky not to get fight of the night honours.

After watching the BJ fight however it occured to me that 2010 could be a pretty stale year as far as the title siuation goes in each weight division.

With perhaps the exception of LHW division i’m not sure there has ever been a period when the champion of each weight class is so dominant over the rest of the division. So dominant that the lose of their respective titles is almost inconcievable.

When I consider BJ, GSP, Anderson Silva and Brock I find it difficult to think who might give these guys decent competition let alone removing the belts from their waists.

  • MANNY says:

THERE IS NO AT 155 THAT CAN HANDLE BJS HANDS NOT EVEN THE BULLY THAT WILL BE A REPEAT OF LAST NIGHT

  • Ed says:

Well, never say never, but I just can’t see the Bully giving BJ half the battle that Diego did. Just my opinion. As other including Dana commented, Diego looked as beat up as I have ever seen a person from a UFC fight. I wonder if this was one of those that a figher is never really the same from. I gained respect for him though he never gave up mentally though his body could not take much more.

  • sprinkboy says:

Hate Brock. Hope he never comes back. The “Nightmare” was anything but, B J Kicked his a**, great fight. Fitch is way overated as he proved last night. Struve on the main card? You got to be kidding me.

  • miggy24 says:

Wow Penn made Diego look like a chump. I really wanted Diego to pull it out but he was to careful he should have laid it all on the line. Oh well he’ll be back I’m sure a Sanchez Florian rematch is next can’t wait for that one.

  • JOHNBOY says:

penn gsp 3 penn gsp 3 penn gsp 3 lol quality tho i not the biggest sanchez fan hes abit of a weirdo glad penn DESTROYED him, mir is the main man

  • Dr.Doom says:

Penn’s trainer was calling out aoki . If the UFC wanted to see that happen they could easily pay DREAM a “user fee ” for a special 1 fight deal . Odds are Penn beats him down with strikes but aoki has a chance on the ground with those long limbs .

Other than the maynard fight he’s basically done at lightweight ………

  • Dietrich says:

Just got back from Memphis. It was a great card in a dump of a town. Parking is a joke…Saw Clay Guida’s mom and family socialize with some of the bottom half of the bell curve…Always save your bank for the good seats(or bad ones in Vegas). The only fight that was tedious was Fitch but it was a long sit in bad stadium seating. The moron(official) who took two points away from Funch should lose his title right now. That was a tough fight for him but he worked the whole way through it. Mir/Penn/Forian/Belcher/Rogan/Buffer all made it a good value for the entertainment dollar.

  • c4rm0 says:

I hate all these WWE idiots who suddenly have started to watch MMA. “Never pay unless Brock is fighting” are you a complete retard? Brock fights are boring all he does is outwrestle / sits on his opponent and throws small hammer fists with his lunchbox hands Its only affective because the guy is a generic freak.

I would rather watch BJ Penn anyday of the week over Brock

  • Dietrich says:

    Justin,
You should get off the interstate and get in it…Its a war zone..
Oh ate at the Neelys place(They are WAY overrated)

    • Justin says:

What did you think of Nashville when you were there for that UFN a little while back?

Maybe I’m spoiled, or maybe I just ignore the problems around here, but I often find myself thinking how much I would not like to live in some of the places I have traveled to or through because of how dingy and “bad” they look. (Memphis, Louisville, Nashville, Charlotte, Atlanta)

  • JOHNBOY says:

i mean like lesnar hes a beast but bj is way more fun to watch i mean i dont no whats next for penn maybe a move up and koshcheck?????????

  • WHEN BROCK GETS HEALTHY… I would like to see him fight Mir again. Mir obviously has learned that being out weighed by 40lbs (or whatever it was?) is a serious disadvantage. I think a huge Mir can take Lesnar. Lesnar has size, speed, and wrestling in spades but I think I’ll take Mir’s years of MMA experience when the size issue is evened out.

BJ still retains the DigYourOwnHole’s Worlds Best P4P Fighter title.

Belcher won fight of the night on the condition that he use the money to either fix or remove that aweful Johnny Cash / Porky Pig tattoo. Its like the foldable last page of MAD magazine.

  • c4rm0 says:

BJ Penn is unbeatable at 155 and he would beat everyone at WW bar GSP

Fighting him must be a complete nightmare

Can you outbox him – No he has world class boxing probaly best in UFC

Can you take him down – No (Unless your GSP) his takedown defence is the best i ever seen

Can you submit him – No BJJ world champ after 3 years and awesome on the ground!!

Can you knock him out – No he has a granite chin and is so elusive

He has the complete package the only thing that let him down was his Cardio but that has now improved greatly with Marv Marinovich

I cant see BJ , GSP , Anderson Silva losing for a very long time so they might as well fight each other GSP vs Penn 3 please or GSP vs Anderson Silva

  • Christian V says:

Wow BJP just dominated! Diego just disappointed the shi* out of me, not because he lost but because he just looked unprepared in every aspect of the fight.

I’m I the only one that hates how the announcers always seen to pick a favorite fighter off the bat while annoucing a fight? Seems like I’m watching the local telecast of a baseball team the way Rogan or Gold just suck off the fighter they pick before the fight even begins..

  • Sadly, Penn vs GSP just isn’t practical. Penn eats doughnuts to get up to WW and GSP is too big to consider a catch weight. They both could learn a lot from each other.

I give BJ serious credit for the run he had a WW though. I think if BJ REALLY wanted the WW title and was willing to stay at WW, it would be a much better fight between BJ and GSP. Im not sure how the necessary bulk would affect his skills though.

  • Dietrich says:

Sorry I didn’t respond sooner…..Nashville was a better spot for the fight. When you and Kris go to UFN in january scope out the parking situation ahead of time. Memphis was the worst I have ever seen. I am so glad I checked it in advance. 10 spots here… 20 spots here….Pathetic.There were alot of other things wrong too but I wont bore with details….The card pretty much beat the location with the exception of the Fitch fight which was an ordeal if you had sit through the entire card, the gate wait, and the early parking necessity. (In case you are wondering…Reason I sold the tickets for Diaz-Maynard… We were in a wreck last month and I am rehabbing my shoulder right now so it was time to cherry pick and the main event was all I wanted to see) Now If I could get rid of the tickets to 108(The card that never was) things will turn up…..
