Although BJ Penn hasn’t fought in over a year, and admits he hasn’t done any training since his loss to Frankie Edgar, the legendary fighter is apparently interested in fighting again…well, at least one person.
Penn recently appeared on “UFC Tonight”, and during the appearance, the former champ talked about his last outing, and Mike Dolce. As you likely know, Penn took on Frankie Edgar for a third time last July, and the latter badly outscored Penn and stopped him in the third round.
After the disappointing loss, Penn and Dolce exchanged verbal shots through the media. The fitness guru was brought in to help Penn prepare for Edgar, and after the bout, “The Prodigy” said he’d never hire Dolce again. Dolce proceeded to claim that Penn didn’t train very hard for the bout, and that the Hawaiian star didn’t really listen to his advice. Penn denied those claims.
So, during his segment with “UFC Tonight”, Penn had this to say about Dolce, and featherweight contender, Nik Lentz (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):
“I’m sick and tired of hearing about Mike Dolce. I’ll put a challenge out right now: You go get Nik Lentz, your boy, bring him down to 145 and I’ll run right through him in one round and then I’ll find you in the back and smash you. If Dolce says I don’t train, let’s do this. I would come out for this. Some things were said, got heated. I worked with him for 20 days and paid him $1000 a day. I’m sick of hearing that.”
“At 145. Let’s do this. That was my last fight. I had a bad showing. I’m ready for something like this. I haven’t been in a gym for two years. I’ll come back for the grudge match, then we’ll see.”
How about that? Now Lentz has already responded on Instagram, and noted that although he hasn’t worked with Dolce for a while, he’d be happy to bring Penn out of retirement. He also called the legend a “spoiled little rich kid”.
Will this happen? Hard to say. UFC boss man Dana White made it seem pretty clear, however, that he didn’t want to see Penn fighting any more after his last loss.
