“He fights too safe,” Liddell said. “Here’s the problem. Like GSP [Georges St-Pierre]. I love GSP. He’s a great fighter. He makes some really good guys look stupid, but he doesn’t try to finish fights. He likes to go out, beat you, follow the game plan, make sure he wins the fight.
“I understand that from a manager or coach’s standpoint, but from a fan’s standpoint? I don’t want to watch it. I don’t want you to go out and do just enough to win. I don’t mind if you win by decision but I just want you to try to finish him. Go after him. Try to hurt him.”
How about that? Before Jones was stripped of the title earlier this year, his last three wins were via decision. But, those wins came against top contenders in Alexander Gustafsson, Glover Teixeira and Daniel Cormier. So, the former champ’s supporters would likely argue finishing those guys is easier said than done.
But, there’s certainly no question that Liddell was always gunning for the stoppage. Thus, this is why, he is one of the most popular fighters the sport has ever known.
It will be interesting to see how Jones looks in his next bout, now that it looks like it could come sometime in early 2016.
