BJ PennUFC lightweight champion BJ Penn and challenger Diego Sanchez successfully make weight on Friday for their UFC 107 matchup, which headlines Saturday’s pay-per-view event in Memphis, Tennessee.

Penn weighed-in right at the 155-pound division limit on his first attempt, while Sanchez initially weighed in one pound heavy but ultimately made weight, tipping the scale at 154.5 on a second try.

Co-headlining heavyweights Frank Mir (264.5) and Cheick Kongo (239) and featured lightweights Kenny Florian (156) and Clay Guida (156) also made weight, as did the rest of the 11-bout card, though Edgar Garcia required additional time to shed an extra 2 pounds, while a number of fighters had to strip down and take advantage of the one-pound allowance to make weight.

  • Justin says:

Mir is huge, he put on almost twenty pounds since July. I guess he was serious when he said he was working on getting bigger after losing to Brock. I guess we’ll see how the extra weight affects him tomorrow night.

Gonna try to find out what’s up with Belcher being at 195.

    • carls says:

I personally think Belcher could be a bit big for 185. I know there are other big fighters that make the cut like Silva, Marquardt and Franklin. But some guys dont lose the weight as well as others.

Just a thought, or maybe he had a minor injury that kept him from training at 100%

    • Justin says:

Gouveia reportedly asked for it to be made at a catchweight of 190 this afternoon, and Belcher countered offered to just have it at 195, “stating he was already at 195 pounds and didn’t see the use in cutting extra weight.” [MMAWeekly]

I assume Belcher’s stance was, “If it’s going to be at a catchweight anyways, I’m not cutting anymore weight.”

  • Jerod says:

I wonder how much of an effect the weight cut will have on Diego since he came up short at first. He must not have done enough “YES Cartwheels.”

  • muaythai4life says:

With all these catchweights at 195lbs I hope that the UFC opens up that as a weight class. 185-205 is a pretty big jump, and a number of fighters are right in the middle. You could easily see Franklin, Houston Alexander, Rashad Evans, Belcher, Hammill all go to that weight fairly easily.

    Just a thought.

i got the same picks dude! looking for the diego upset!

I’m wondering if kongo turning around was a “f*** you” to frank mir or if mir got in kongo’s head. It’s hard to tell if kongo is pumped, nervous, or having some doubts maybe?

Either way, hope kongo can stop any takedowns/subs and knock frank mir the f*** out. Frank mir talks too much dude and from what it looks like, brock was unable to teach him a lesson cuz he’s still doing what he does.

  • TC says:

BJ will take Sanchez to ground and that’s the end of the story. Like Guida controlled sanchez on the ground.

  • bigworthy says:

is it just me or was everybody looking at thoughs scale funny. ya know the same way my wife looks at the scales if there a bit on the high side.

  • mikewh says:

Crazy thought here but as i always expect the unexpected i’m wondering if Mir might surprise with a KO or TKO.
I don’t see Big Frank losing this as he can take a pretty good shot and is more well rounded for sure, but often when i look for the obvious result in a fight i get surprised …enjoy everyone!!

  • Jerod says:

Yeah, I was confused by Cheick’s standoff pic. I just figured i missed something. Still not sure what that was all about.

As far as the main event goes, I am yet again a victim of the hype, because I have no idea how this thing will go down. And what I mean by that is when GSP fought Jon Fitch or The Pitbull, or when BJ fought Florian, there was a huge hype machine that said those fights were going to be wars. But what really ended up happening was a lopsided whooping on each of those occaisions courtesy of the titleholder. And I am starting to lean towards BJ treating Diego in the same fashion, in that there is a #1 contender and he is shown that he is still leaps ‘n bounds from the current champ. BJ showed that to Kenny and GSP showed that to BJ, and I think BJ is about to show that to Diego.

and as soon as I think I have all that mystique figured out, Diego ends up thumping BJ, so what do I know

  • Eldiablo says:

This was a good weigh-in to watch. I like how Rogan practices his stand-up during the weigh-ins.

Anyone else think Linhares was disapointed when Palhares came in clean-cut? Looked like he wanted a beard-off.

After seeing Funch’s hair do, can we safely nickname him “The d0uchebag”? I’m just sayin’ that’s all.

Holy Sh!t Mir is huge. I know during the countdown they said he put on 20-30 pounds, but I didn’t think they meant 20-30 POUNDS. I guess he figured if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. 245 at UFC 100 and now he’s cutting to 265. Let’s see his cardio.

  • frantzfanon says:

I had to do a double-take at Mir’s weight…wow. That’s a move that may backfire. I mean he completely disses Kongo ground game, but Ju-Jitsu requires so much cardio; if Mir can’t sustain, then the fight stays on its feet.

That could play into Kongo’s hands.

I’d like to se Sanchez and Guida win, but the smart money says otherwise. We shall see….
