Although it sounds like Daniel Cormier may be growing tired of talking about Jon Jones, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to fight the former champ again.
Cormier is scheduled to fight Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 192 on October 3rd, which will mark the first time he’s defended the light-heavyweight belt, since he won it in May.
Since Cormier defeated Anthony Johnson, and not his rival Jon Jones to become champ, “DC” continues to field a lot of questions about the latter. After all, it was Jones’ arrest, rather than a defeat in the Octagon, which cost him the title.
Well, in recent media call to promote UFC 192, here is some of what Cormier had to say about “Bones” (quotes via MMA Fighting.com):
“The thing that’s really f—– up is, we live our day to day lives normal, we don’t worry about Jones,” Cormier said. “But you ask questions about this guy, and then the headline will make it sound as though I’m over here stewing about Jon Jones.”
“Every guy on this call, myself, Gustafsson, Rashad Evans, Jon Jones, everyone wants this fight,” Cormier said. “It’s not just me. I’m the one asked about it more because I have the championship. But I think everyone should want him to come back and have the opportunity to compete. …”
The reality is, unless Jones returns to the UFC, there’ll be an asterisk beside the name of whoever is the champ for quite sometime. Prior to his arrest, much of the talk regarding Jones was when he’d move to heavyweight, since he was so dominant at 205.
UFC 192 will be hosted by the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
