Former WEC light heavyweight champion Steve Cantwell will look to rebound from back-to-back losses when he takes on veteran Vladimir Matyushenko on the preliminary card of UFC 108 on January 2 in Las Vegas.
Cantwell (7-3) won four-straight after suffering his first career loss to Brian Stann in 2007, including winning the WEC title with a first-round TKO in a rematch with Stann as well as earning “Submission of the Night” honors by submitting Razak Al-Hassan in his UFC debut. However, “The Robot” would next suffer a loss to Luiz Cane in April and drop a rubber match to Stann in September.
Matyushenko (23-4), an IFL and UFC veteran, returned to the Octagon in September, picking up a unanimous decision victory over Igor Pokrajac at UFC 103, “The Janitor’s” second-straight win and 10th in 11 bouts since leaving the UFC in 2003.
UFC 108 is headlined by light heavyweight contenders Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva, with the pay-per-view event’s main card also featuring Carlos Condit vs. Paul Daley, Junior Dos Santos vs. Gilbert Yvel, Tyson Griffin vs. Jim Miller, and Joe Lauzon vs. Sam Stout.
