“Rampage” Jackson: I’m Coming Back To The UFC

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Dec 4, 2009 at 10:55 am ET56 Comments

Quinton JacksonFormer UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, who announced in September that he was “done fighting,” today announced on his official website that he’ll soon return to the UFC to finish out his contract:

I’ve noticed that the UFC & TUF have some fans brainwashed or something. They still haven’t realized yet that the TV show is just a TV show. I did my job by entertaining people and if you ever paid any attention to me, that’s what I’m known for doing.

Now, I wanted to let my fans know that I’m going to come back to the UFC & finish my contract. Not because the haters are talking shit about me being scared of Rashad or Titties or anybody else. I’m coming back for my fans & to shut Rashad’s mouth up & shut Dana’s mouth up. Then after that I’m going back to doing movies & I might do a boxing match once a year just to stay in shape. Hate on dis!

Before abruptly announcing his retirement several months ago, “Rampage” served as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter 10 and was slated for a grudge match with rival opposing coach and fellow former champion Rashad Evans at UFC 107, but the matchup was postponed and ultimately scratched due to Rampage’s role in the upcoming A-Team movie.

As predicted the minute I heard he was “done fighting”…I pity the fool when he fights Rashad. Actually, I think it’ll be an even fight. Kimbo would have been a better Mr. T, by the way.

  • mmaguy says:

“Ma Man” Just take that lil boy Rashad out and go on with yo buiness…That show hyped it and I’m sure I’m not the only one dying to see you put that kid to sleep….

    • dbiz says:

Actually, I’m hoping that Rampage gets put out to pasture so he can fail in his movie ventures and come crawling back with his tail between his legs.

Rashad has been a hundred times more likable on that show because he gives a damn. Rampage was only doing it to try and get a headlining fight. And trust me, he ain’t getting one otherwise. He hasn’t evolved with the sport and he’s not going to be a force anymore. A KO of Rashad, the only way he’ll win the fight, still puts him in line to get his leg chopped down by Forrest again. And his lake of desire (or maybe ability) to evolve his fighting style means he’ll suffer the same fate.

      • mmaguy says:

Man how could you not like Rampage? Rashad needs to lighten up I seriously doubt that he cares as much as he fronted, he knows how to play the camera. Besides how much difference can a coach really make on a fighter in 6 weeks?

      • Justin says:

How can you not like Rampage? Because he’s a self important jerk, that’s how.

    • Justin says:

You’re not the only one that still wants to see Rampage win, but that train left this station a long time ago, I will definitely be hoping to see Rampage get put down.

      • mmaguy says:

Didn’t he just put Silva to sleep recently, that wasn’t that long ago. I know thatin this biz, you’re as good as your last fight but beating somebody who you lost to twice in Pride shows a sign of evolving as a fighter..

      • Justin says:

Silva is not the same fighter he used to be.

      • bigworthy says:

Not with ya on this one Justin. Yea I am with ya on the self self self situation, but Rashad IMO is a tool. Every single war of the mouth was instigated by him and he does know how to play to the cameras. I’ve tried to like him but for some reason he just grinds my gears.
        IMO

      • Justin says:

I never said I liked Rashad. I just like Rampage less, and double KO would be pretty sweet.

  • EtherBunny says:

Yup, I’ll be pulling for Rashad. I’m guessing sometime in late March or early April?

  • CBrown says:

I think it would be great for Rampage to come to the ring dressed as Mr. T

  • Chrisl says:

    I’m shocked… ok really I am not

  • Andrew says:

How many more fights are left on his contract?

  • jazz says:

I think everyone saw this coming. You know what, imo this season of TUF sucked ass and although rampage has made some poor decisions and has lost a lot of respect from the mma community and from mma fans, he’s still one of the best lhw’s in the world and unfortunately for you rampag haters/rashad fans, rampage is still a way better fighter than rashad and will STILL knock rashad out and probably do so worse than machida did because rampages ko is unmatched by any other 205er.

We might not even get to watch that fight because thiago silva might put rashad away before rampage can.

    • mmaguy says:

Word.. Rampage is a seasoned vet. Rashad is coming out from his first loss and that ‘s in the back of his mind. Before Michida, he had that huge confidence as being undefeated. we’ll see how he performs under Thiago who doesn’t lack confidence coming out from a Ko win againt’s Jardine..

  • Bill says:

I really hope Rashad knocks him out in the first round, I know it wont happen but I can still hope.

  • Paralyzed 7 says:

Anyone think there’s a chance the T. Silva v Evans fight gets scrapped and Jackson slides into T. Silva’s place?

If Evans loses to Silva I’m not sure a Jackson v Evans fight has the same appeal.

  • eric says:

    WHOPP HIS A$$ RAMPAGE!!!!

Stick to one name. -Justin H

  • CBrown says:

Yea Rampage is gonna whoop his ass

  • animosity says:

Of course he’s coming back, didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out. I liked Sugar a lot before this season of TUF but, after seeing him instigate a lot of the drama my respect for him is somewhat lost. Yes, Rampage had his moments on the show but, it seemed like Shad was that annoying little brother that always starts sh*t just to get a reaction.

  • nico says:

Cant wait to see Rampage TKO Evans. Know one in MMA is more annoying then nipple tweaker Evans.

    • Justin says:

I assume you meant “no one” and well, I would have to disagree with you greatly. Here’s my list of people more annoying that Evans:

Rampage, Tito, Both Diaz brothers, Jess Taylor, Junie Browning, War Machine, Mauro Renallo (I know he’s not a fighter, but still).

And I’m sure there’s more I just can’t think of them off the top of my head.

  • sugar1plum says:

Alot of what you people say on here makes sense from both sides; Rashad Evans advantage is that although if you really take a close look, Rampage did not initiate the anger between the two. His jokes as he is known for, ignited anger in Rashad which not most but all of the time led Rashad to get into Rampages face. When you do that to another man, and especially Rashad according to Rampage who has bad ass breathe, that is going to start a huge controversy. I have been a fan of UFC since the Gracie days, and the sport has evolved so much. Rampage don’t forget, never truly started off having any training props to that.
That being said, he is getting older, has been knocked out by Wanderlei twice regardless if Wanderlie is not the same anymore, and is older than Rashad.
Rashad uses his brains more when it comes down to being defensive and on offense. Both men have heart, I truly believe that. Rampage has the hand and body strength, but not the quick speed and composure Rashad has.
In any fight, one blow can end it all. But technically speaking, I give Rashad the advantage.
Rampage seems like a jokster but the reality is that any jokster that knows how to fight and has been fighting in professional MMA can only take so much serious trash talk taht Rashad gave him.
Many of times on the show, Rampage initiated a joke-emphasize a joke to Rashad which in return, Rashad became sensitive, just like the fighter Darrel, and therefore, aside from wanting camera time, would purposely get in Rampages face to start beef.
    End of discussion.
However, winner in fight-My choice Rashad Evans

  • sugar1plum says:

This does have to do with Rampage coming back after retirement and whether or not the person who comments and reviews these comments decides to post this, I truly believe this has never come up in any discussion regarding Dana White, the UFC versus other MMA organizations as well as boxing.
One core reason alot of good fighters are still with the UFC is because beside the fact taht strikeforce is slowly creeping up on them, there are not many other organizations that give these fighters the spotlight required to showcase the beauty of MMA and their skills.
That beign said, they are no where near the pay the deserve whether well known or not.
Do you realize that Rampage could have made much more at Strikeforce if he wanted to go there instead of acting? MMA is made up of fighters who actually are intelligent because it takes alot of brains and creativity to become a fighter. Technically savvy, and also heart are major aspects that make a champion.
Dana White is always involved in controversies regarding his own fighters, other organizations withihn MMA, or even discussions on boxing.
If anything, Dana White should recognize coming from a boxing background, how much a Maywhether gets paid versus in comparision how little big time MMA fighters get. He claims UFC is a billion dollar industry, damn right you should respect and pay even fighters who are not well known, but willing to get in the Octagon more than pennies compared to boxers who make millions.
HOw come the media never posed those questoins to Dana? Because it’s all marketing. By asking that would go against promoting the sport, and become a mess and rude awakening when fighters truly thing about how little they make in comparison to other sports.
Yet, MMA is the one sport I love. I respect everyone willing to get into a cage, an Octagon or fighting another professional MMA.
I respect Dana White when it comes to being direct in terms of why a JOse Conseco is all of a sudden sanctioned to fight in Japan, or other non-MMA fighters, are willing to come into this sport, denegrate to skills and beauty that makes it up such as Anderson Silva’s “violent Ballet”. Yet in a sense, he’s hypocritical because he himself brings in ex football players with no real understanding of the art of MMA to fight in the Ultimate Fighter.
Eventually, there are and will be negative consequences. Either the elite fighters in UFC will go to other organizations, or this sport will become nothing and thta is the saddest part. Eventually fighters such as in the WEC where champions make peanuts,13K are going to wake up and smell the coffee, not with their noses, with their brains!

Yeah, you’re going to need to stick with one name. -Justin H

  • zac says:

i dont know why all the first poster’s are hating on rampage so much. do you think he really had a calling to be a TUF coach? Hell no! Dana white wants to put Rampage on TV as much as possible, because he has a personality that weather you love it or hate it, youre going to watch.

I hope Rashaad gets KTFO, and I hope that Rampage doesnt get another movie job and stays with MMA. He should still be champ if the Forrest fight was being judged the same as they were at the Shogun v Machida fight.

    • Justin says:

I already didn’t like Rampage before TUF, and the way he acted on TUF made me like him even less. Whether or not he “had a calling to be a TUF coach,” doesn’t matter, he still could have actually tried, and he didn’t.

  • CC says:

So he infers he is just playing a character to entertain on TUF, but then in his “real” comments continues to be a childish bully and make fun of a fighter? Yes you are funny and entertaining Rampage, but now you are saying that we’ve been “brainwashed” to think you are terrible coach, and person? Don’t play us for fools Q.

  • I will never root for Evans in anthing, he was a good coach on TUF but not THAT good, i mean he wasn’t Tito or Serra.

Evans always tries to act professional and not Ghetto when in front of a camera, he’s fake and i don’t like him, if i sound biast it’s because i am.

I’m not the biiggest Rampage fan but i sure hope he ko’s Evans quick and hard. Evans is not that good, he ko’s a 89 year old Liddell and think’s he’s a ko artist..He’s talking about makin Rampage “my bi*ch”, well guranteed that when these two if ever fight Evans will look to take the fight to the ground.

  • nev-o says:

Rampage jackson 1 Cardboard Door 0….enough said

  • jcohl says:

“Man how could you not like Rampage?”
I can’t believe someone actually [rhetorically] asked that.

Well, it’s hard to like a man that agrees to coach young and/or inexperienced MMA fighters, ostensibly to give them some sort of guidance and direction in the sport, and he then proceeds to leave fallen fighters under his tutelage in the cage while he carries on outside of the cage for the cameras and the TV audience.
And when he’s not doing that he’s bombing out to lunch with his crew instead of getting Demico Rogers taped up and ready to go for his fight.
And when he does try to “coach”, it usually takes the form of, “don’t get hit”, or “try and win”.

So please, spare me any further defenses of Rampage Jackson. he may beat Rashad Evans, but what he won’t be able to defeat so quickly is the lasting bad impressions and lingering disrespect he’s earned this season of TUF…

  • JOMamma says:

Rampage was probably the worst coach of all the seasons(except for bible thumping Huges) Kimbo would have learned more from Rashad. But all in all I hope Rampage knocks the nipple twisting bastard out hard!

    • Justin says:

How do you figure Hughes was a worse coach than Rampage? He had guys from his team win the show both seasons he was the coach, and on season 6 it was Hughes v. Hughes in the finals.

    • jcohl says:

Also, aside from the laser-sharp points Justin H made, why would “Bible-thumping” as you call it effect a man’s ability to coach MMA?
I personally do not consider myself a man too down with the “religiosity”, but as long as I was getting coached by a guy like Matt Hughes, who’s MMA/UFC resume reads like a fighter’s wish list, why do I care what he reads in his spare time, whether it be the Bible, Sports Illustrated, or People Magazine?
And from what I remember of the TUF seasons he coached, it wasn’t like he waved off Jews, Muslims, or Buddhists just to specifically coach Christians. From what I saw he treated his guys equally.
      Tough but fair.
Not trying to put you on blast, JOMamma, just trying to suss out your POV…

      • Justin says:

I think he’s referring to the fact that Hughes gave the guys Bibles and had Bible reading time with them. I can understand how some people would get their feelers hurt and think he was trying to push religion on them, but he didn’t force anyone to participate, and Mac Danzig didn’t, and Hughes didn’t have a problem with that. So… whatever.

  • JENKINS! says:

    WHATSUP YALL?!
I havent posted on here in a while, Ive been extremely busy with finals and such.

Right when Rampage announced his retirement I knew he would be back. Im just suprised it took him this long.
He claims he will complete his contract then go back to acting, however I think once he gets another win in the octagon, he won’t be able to walk away again. The division is getting more and more stacked by the day, and Im sure Rampage will want to get his hands on ‘Shad.
I also think there are plenty of appealing rematches for him. Its a perfect time for him to rematch Forrest Griffin. He could go out on a limb and fight Tito. He could get a rematch with Shogun, etc.

I myself am a Rampage fan. I have never been a Rashad fan. I think Sugar is a little too cocky and I think hes kind of shady in the way he plays Mr. Good Guy on camera, however he is almost always the one to start immature arguements with Rampage. Rampage was a horrible coach, thats a given, and he should stick to fighting and not coaching. Rampage was right though by saying its The Ultimate Fighter not The Ultimate Coach. I think Rampage was a little self centered, but you know what, its his career. Its his life, and he has shown time and time again that he is an amazing fighter. Therefore I will try not to be a critic of his actions. He is a very entertaining, and funny person. I think he shows his true character on camera, and Rashad doesnt IMO.

If and when Rampage and Rashad throw down, I think it will be a very close fight. Im not going to pick a winner yet, because Rashad needs to get passed Thiago first (which I think Thiago is going to win anyways). Rampage will def need a warm up fight though.

Idk if my post was very clear, my bad, I havent been on here in a while. Like I said, Ive been busy. But I have returned.

  • Nick T says:

Everyone saw it coming, Rampage throwing a fit and threatening to not come back, conveniently in time for the fight not to happen anytime soon with Evans tied up. I hate both of these guys, I would love to see it end in a draw so they can both be deprived of a win bonus. Lets put Guida on the card too so we know he takes away any chance of them getting a Fight of the Night bonus.
No one was going to miss Rampage, I am still not impressed by him. After showing all of Japan how to improperly headbutt Wandy’s knees and Shogun’s feet, he comes over here, gets lucky against Chuck (just a matter of who pulled the trigger first and what I consider and early stoppage in a title fight), he layed and prayed on Hendo, got picked apart by Forrest cause he is so predictable for the belt, and now I am supposed to be impressed because he finally avenged Wandy (still 2-1) and beat Jardine (are you kidding me?). Call it careful editing, he still didn’t tend to his defeated fighters and managed to go an entire episode only repeating one word, you could even see Tiki pretending to laugh.
And now Rashad, I used to really enjoy his fights until he ignored his wrestling and became nothing more than an imitation Chuck counterpuncher. I could at least tolerate it until he grabbed his crotch against Forrest, disrespect to the entire sport right there. I don’t even know if I would consider him likable in this past season, maybe Rampage was such a jerk, Rashad could only look good in comparison.
Heads up, I think they are the same fighter but the advantage is Evans only because he has Greg Jackson in his corner. Two counterpunchers waiting to pull the trigger, Evans needs to remember his wrestling and maybe throw one of those Salmon kicks.
For the guy bashing Hughes coaching on TUF, Hughes’s only policy with his team in fights was to stick to your strengths, that was the game plan and he rightfully got angry when they didn’t stick to it and wondered why they lost. He is smart enough to realize that his guys wouldn’t be able to change their entire style in the short time he spent with them. I don’t agree with the bible being handed out but according to interviews it was the only book allowed to be handed out. Ken Shamrock was by far the worst coach ever, and I’m a BJ fan, but Penn was 2nd worst.

    • JENKINS! says:

“No one was going to miss Rampage, I am still not impressed by him. Nick T,
No one was going to miss Rampage? Uhh, I sure as hell was. He is one of the top 10 LHW’s in the world. He has had a VERY impressive career. He did not get lucky against Chuck. He capitalized on opportunities and won fair and square…not just once…but TWICE. If he is so predictable, then how come he has a 30-7 record?

Lets take a gander shall we?

      Rampage has wins over:
      Igor Vovchanchyn
      Kevin Randleman
      Murilo Bustamante
      Chuck Liddell (Twice)
      Minowa
      Ricardo Arona (SICK KO)
      Murilo Ninja
      Matt Lindland
      Dan Henderson
      The Axe Murderer
      The Dean of Mean

Thats a big A$$ list of amazing fighters dude.

Oh and he did not “lay and pray” on Hendo. That was an amazing fight and Im pretty sure that fight was in the top 50 on the list of top 100 UFC fights of all time.

      • dbiz says:

I like how you say top 10, conveniently leaving off which end of the top 10. In the UFC alone, he is behind (and yes, this is my opinion): Machida, Rua, Griffin, Randy and Franklin (and maybe Rashad). Including other promotions, he is behind Mousasi and floating somewhere around Babalu.

  • DigYourOwnHole says:

Ill keep it short and sweet. Simple actions from a simple minded individual.

  • Vinz_Clortho says:

It is so funny people take what they see on the show from the coaches seriously. Understand they are paid to be entertaining, this is truth, reality TV is far, far from reality.

I work with a company that has experience in the production of over 100 reality TV episodes, and when it comes to everyone who isn’t a contestant they have very specific guidelines to follow in order to create specific circumstances on the show in order to make it entertaining.

I wouldn’t be a bit surpised to learn that Rashad and Rampage drink after shooting and have laugh together.

When it comes to the people on the show.. it’s real to an extent but can always be cut anyway by producers to make people look like a particular character archetype.

  • KanO says:

Rashad is going to knock Rampage out. And Rampage c’mon man like you are a great fighter don’t sink as low as everyone else does when they get famous by going into acting. Kick some more ass for a couple years then act when you can’t fight anymore mang!

  • lonon says:

most of you are idiots…rampage is a beast ten times stronger then rashad and better all around who has rashad beat that was great? no one he drawed tito which was bull**** because tito lost a point causing the draw…forest griffin was winning until rashad got a lucky punch…rashads never beat anyone of the ufcs top fighters really and his chin is suspect never got hit hard and when he did he went out…rampage has beat the best in the business for years ufc and pride…henderson, liddell kod right before rashad hmmm, silva, randleman, arona, eastman, hes accomplished something in his career you ****** ****riders go eat rashas **** somemore..and when the fight happens rashad will be put to sleep easy

  • Murphy says:

I have never really likes Rashad and was pulling for rampage going into this season of TUF but after seeing how Rampage treated his fighters that all changed. Even if Rashad was playing it up for the cameras what kind of person walks away for a teammate who tried his best and has just lost then to top it off he drops out of the fight that he asked for and has been hyping I mean of he wants to retire that’s his choice but at least finish what u started I was just disappointed!

  • baller15 says:

rampace has never been knocked out and rashad about got put away in the 3rd by thiago who isnt half as powerful as rampage and rampage has never been knocked out…if these two meet in the octagon im going wit rampage all the way rashad will only win in a decision by using his wrestling…point, blank, period.
