Jose Aldo has said recently that he never watched Conor McGregor’s win over Chad Mendes, but the featherweight champ’s latest comments infer that may have changed.
As you surely recall, or have heard, Mendes was able to take McGregor down on several occasions during their UFC 189 scrap. McGregor didn’t get mauled while he was on his back, but he did take some heavy shots and didn’t threaten Mendes with subs.
In round two, Mendes was controlling the action from the top, before he went for a choke. McGregor rolled out nicely, and yadda, yadda, yadda, he’s the interim featherweight champ.
Well, Aldo recently headed to Las Vegas in advance of his December 12th scrap with McGregor. While discussing “Notorious” at a media event, here is some of what Aldo had to say (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“I see him as nothing,” Aldo said. “Too bad I wasn’t able to fight him that day. But if God wants, I’ll get there and shut his mouth on December 12.”
“F–k, this guy got beat up. (Mendes) was on vacation, fishing. He looked like a turtle. I felt sorry,” said Aldo. “Has (McGregor) ever heard about jiu-jitsu and wrestling in his life? He actually believes the things he says and laughs at himself. F–k, he’s nothing.”
Wow. You have to wonder if these comments got back to McGregor, as the latter was pretty, pretty amped up when they faced off at the end of the presser.
Interestingly enough, Aldo also reportedly said that when he showed up on the set of TUF 22, McGregor came over to shake his hand…The champ also claimed that McGregor was “scared” and “surprised”. It will be interesting to hear if McGregor has a different take on that interaction.
