Johnson and Dodson will battle in the main event of UFC 191 on Saturday, marking the first time they’ve fought, since the champ decisioned the latter in 2013. Since their first encounter was quite competitive, and because Dodson has won three in a row, it’s a rematch that people saw coming.
Another reason the back story for this fight is interesting, is because Dodson has continued to trash Johnson in the media. Not only has the heavy handed fighter said he’d beat Johnson in a rematch, he’s also repeatedly argued that the champ’s even keel personality is bad for the division.
Johnson recently appeared on “UFC Tonight“, and when asked to comment on Dodson’s assertion that “Mighty Mouse” is a “plague” for 125, the champ stated (quote via Fox Sports 1 press release):
“If this guy was at a bar, would I get a beer with him? Absolutely not. Why do I have more Twitter followers and Instagram followers than he does? He brought a lot of fire power to the first fight, but it wasn’t enough. We’ll see what he brings on Saturday night.”
It’s an argument that Johnson is likely really, really tired of hearing. The renowned fighter has also been accused of not providing exciting fights, even though he is one of the planet’s best, pound-for-pound competitors. When asked to comment on this narrative–again–Johnson stated:
“My last five title defenses speak for themselves. I knocked out Joseph Benavidez, who had never been finished. I submitted Kyoji Horiguchi, who’s never been finished. I finished John Moraga, who had never been finished. I’m the champion and I’m getting better all around.”
Ya. Not sure how someone can argue with Johnson here. If he can go out and finish Dodson in highlight reel fashion, then maybe, just maybe, he’ll silence his critics. Dodson is going to be a tough test, however, as he’s also ridiculously fast and packs a big punch.
UFC 191 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
