Josh Koscheck vs. Paulo Thiago Rematch Targeted for UFC 109
A rematch between welterweights Josh Koscheck and Paulo Thiago is being targeted for UFC 109 on February 6 in Las Vegas, according to MMA Fanhouse.
Thiago scored one of the upsets of the year when he knocked out Koscheck in the opening round of their first meeting in February at UFC 95.
Following the loss, Koscheck (14-4) has fought his way back into title-contention at 170-pounds with back-to-back wins over Frank Trigg in September and Anthony Johnson earlier this month at UFC 106.
Thiago (12-1) dropped a unanimous decision to Koscheck’s teammate Jon Fitch in July, but bounced back from his first career loss with a unanimous decision over Jacob Volkmann at UFC 106.
UFC 109 is expected to be headlined by Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman and is also likely to feature Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller and Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg, while a matchup between middleweight contenders Vitor Belfort and Nate Marquardt reported earlier Tuesday for the event is “not happening,” according to Heavy.com.

Randy Couture vs Mark Coleman will be interesting to say the least. Definitely have Randy winning that one. I dislike both Matt Serra and Frank Trigg but both are coming off losses. I’m hoping that Nate wins but I can see Vitor winning as well. And I choose Maia over Miller.
Trigg kinda asked for this fight right after “reportedly” getting cut after his loss to KOS, he has called this the “loser leaves town” fight, due to Serra coming off of some losses as well, yet I do believe that the UFC might keep Serra even if he loses to Trigg for losing to The Greatness (GSP) and Matt Hughes isn’t all that bad but we shall see
To be honest, I wouldn’t miss either one of them if they both got cut ;P Not really looking forward to this card as much anymore. Not PPV worthy in my opinion. Hopefully Mark Coleman won’t look like he did against Shogun.
vengance shall b kos’. this card took a hurting when anderson vs belfort feel through. now this card looks sick. any randy fight gets me pumped plus vitor vs marquardt is gonna b awesome and wit kos getting his vengance i cant wait til feb!!!
What a terrible headliner fight. Two good fighters, dont get me wrong, but there has to be a better headliner out there. I think the Belfort V Marquardt match up is a better draw the what they have going now.
Belfort-Marquardt would have likely been the co-main event, but it’s reportedly “not happening”. Couture and Coleman are both “names” so they’d probably get the headlining spot even if Belfort-Marquardt was booked.
snooooozer,,,heads up Kos
yeah……. hmmm . If there ever was a UFC card to put on free TV its this one .Good matchups but not worth paying PPV $$ for .
Not to mention it’s the annual day after superbowl match. Good way to live up to Lesnar Mir/Sykvia Nog and GSP Penn 2. Just a bad luck streak is all.
Obviously Sylvia not Syklia.
I’m kinda glad the Belfort/Marquardt fight may not be happening. I’d like to see both guys face Anderson. Nate has looked a lot better since his last time seeing Silva and deserves a shot, but so does Belfort for his impressive KO over Franklin. Having them fight each other just makes one of them fall down a notch, and makes a future fight with the champ seem silly.
Koscheck is really getting a bone from the UFC brass for this one. You don’t normally get to avenge a loss so fast, and Koss with almost assuredly beat Thiago this time around. I feel that their first meeting was half fluke and half Koscheck getting over confident with his hands. I doubt he’ll make that mistake again, and Paulo will be in for a long night.
I’m diggin this matchup! Everyone is saying thiago got lucky with his beautiful uppercut that shut kos up but the realiy is that thiago, like everyone else, can see that right overhand coming 4 miles away. Although kos might have learned from his loss, i doubt he’ll give thiago more trouble then his superior training partner fitch did. Thiago will outclass him on the feet but probably end up subbing kos for sure.
I’m glad nate and vitor isn’t happening. It would just make anderson silva happy to not have to fight one of these guys. He’s probably already smiling at the fact that he doesn’t have to fight hendo again.
Nate should hold out for what he’s earned and that’s a shot at anderson.
At some point Anderson Silva is going to have to fight someone, somewhere. Its not going to be Nate Marquardt, because Silva has already had Ed Soares wave that fight off, and Dana stupidly agreed.
Honestly, if you’re a contending 185er in the UFC, my best advice would be to simply wait until Silva retires, as he’s suggested he might April 2010.
With the title not being locked up by all of the BlackHouse politicking, Marqaurdt should eventually get the shot he was promised way back when.
Maybe by then the Hendo situation can be resolved, and the 185 division can be lifted out of the doldrums and back into the spotlight…
wow Jcohl, you put hate out on Dana, Ed, Anderson, all of BlackHouse all in a short post congrats :P
I try to be as fair as I can, fr702.
It just wouldn’t be right to put only Dana or Ed Soares in my crosshairs, so I make sure I get everyone with one shot!
:)
I hope that Pauolo Thiago ko’s Koscheck again or makes him tap, either way it’s rare that i root against one of my fellow red-white-and blue brothers and it’s even more rare that i root for a Brazilian over an American but this time i’ll make an exception and root for Thiago to go 2-0 against Koscheck.
I don’t see Kos avenging his loss. He will get beat again and again I will laugh and rejoice.
NightRider…………………..
Knight Rider?
Kos by vicious revenge force. I dont think he underestimated Paulo this time. Paulo did look good in his last fight though.
Koscheck, will get the win this time around. As stated, he underestimated Paulo and paid dearly for it. We just saw Thaigo almost get beat by a guy that just made his way up to the UFC level “Volkmann”, Witch I thought the fight could have gone either way.
Any Card Headlined by Couture vs Colemen I won’t even talk about beyond this point!!!!!!!!!! GOT THAT MR. WHITE.
I’m sure Dana White is giving your opinion all the consideration that it deserves…
It’s not that this is a bad card … but maybe instead of the UFC trying to cut down the competition with shear volume they just need to put on a challengers type of show . The Ultimate fighter has gotten stale imoa and the WEC is not my fave either… I liked it better when they had the other divisions . At this point they could have filtered all those middleweights / lightheavy’s that are chomping for a belt there . Instead they shoved them all together …… its kinda like the WCW syndrome , got too many stars wanting to be champ and not enough challengers to make it work .
