UFC 191: Frank Mir Makes Case For Why Heavyweight Division is “Best It’s Ever Been”

Frank Mir has been part of the UFC’ since 2001, and the former champ believes the talent pool for the heavyweight division has never been deeper then it is today.

Mir is getting ready to face Andrei Arlovski at UFC 191, who is another heavyweight that’s been around the block several times. While speaking to FOX Sports recently, Mir was asked about the state of the heavyweight division, and here is some of what he had to say:

“I think this era right now is the best it’s ever been,” said Mir

“I think in the past we always had top level guys but I think it dwindled off after four or five,” Mir added. “Right now there’s guys that are 12th, 13th, 14th, that are great fighters in the heavyweight division.”

The 36 year-old has a point. Thanks to the growth of MMA there are more athletes getting involved in the sport than ever before. In addition, unlike the previous era of MMA, the majority of the best fighters are under one promotional roof, and not split between PRIDE and the UFC.

The UFC’s heavyweight division includes well rounded fighters like Cain Velasquez, Junior dos Santos, Stipe Miocic, and the champ Fabricio Werdum, among several others. Matt Mitrione is ranked #13, and most would agree, he could give a lot of the top 10 guys a run for their money.

Sure, Bellator has a lot of great fighters, but even the biggest UFC critic would concede the promotion’s roster is much deeper in terms of talent.

UFC 191 will go down at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. In the main event, flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson will battle John Dodson.
