If you’re one of the folks who’s ever called Demetrious Johnson ‘boring’, well then, chances are you’re not going to care for what the flyweight champ has to say in response…
Yes, although Johnson is one of the most well rounded, dynamic and explosive fighters on the planet, there are some, sadly many, who don’t tune into see him fight. It’s a narrative that has been tied to Johnson for a quite a while now, even though, “Mighty Mouse” has finished four of his last five opponents.
Johnson recently appeared on a media call to promote his upcoming, September 5th scrap with John Dodson, and once again, the renowned fighter was asked about his critics. Here is some of what Johnson had to say (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“It’s only the fans and uneducated fools out there that say, ‘Oh, you’re boring,’” Johnson said. “You can say so, but you just don’t understand what I’m doing. There’s a process going on with the technique I bring to the table.
“I try not to think about that stuff because it’s only going to go so far. When you start thinking about that stuff then you don’t give great performances. I’m in the history book for the latest submission in UFC history. I’m more focused on that; going out and performing and being a well-rounded fighter.”
Sorry if you’re one of the people who’s said Johnson’s boring, but what he’s saying here is on point. The guy is unquestionably one of the most talented fighters in the sport, so to say he’s boring, is nuts.
Now, if you need a healthy dose of trash talking and showboating to get up for a fight, well, that’s a little bit different. Johnson is a mild mannered guy, who typically doesn’t go around slinging insults or brash statements. So, this is another reason why he hasn’t become one of the superstars of the sport, even though his record indicates he should be.
UFC 191, and Johnson-Dodson II, will go down at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Johnson decisioned Dodson when they fought for the first time in 2013.
