UFC Cuts Middleweight Jake Rosholt Following UFC 106 Loss

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Nov 30, 2009 at 6:41 pm ET22 Comments

Jake RosholtMiddleweight Jake Rosholt (6-2, 1-2 UFC) has been cut by the UFC after suffering a first-round submission loss to Kendall Grove at UFC 106 earlier this month, Rosholt announced Monday on Twitter.

A four-time All-American and three-time Division I champion wrestler at Oklahoma State, Rosholt won four-straight since beginning his MMA career in mid-2008, then pushed his record to 5-0 with a second-round knockout of Nissen Osterneck in his WEC debut last November. Rosholt was swiftly submitted by Dan Miller in his UFC debut earlier this year, and despite rebounding with a submission of veteran Chris Leben in August, he was released after dropping to 1-2 inside the Octagon with his loss to Grove.

Rosholt should find another employer soon enough, with Strikeforce likely topping the list of promotions vying for his services to further bolster its middleweight division.

lol. thats all i got to say about that. The UFC obviously doesn’t care about him.

  • Eldiablo says:

I’m surprised he didn’t get cut first by that ridiculous necklace. He’s not that bad though, considering Leben’s still got a job in the UFC.

  • chrisl says:

wow little surprised by this. hope he works back into the organization, he shows a lot of promise. He’s a tough kid who can really wrestle just has to work on his submission defense like so many wrestlers.

  • wow, Jake is pretty talented, the dude has lots of potential and is still young, guess it’s getting harder for guys to stick around.

  • Markus J says:

It’s too bad for Rosholt that he wasn’t on TUF. Then losses wouldn’t much matter and he’d always have a home with the UFC. Just like Bonnar, Leben, Grove, Danzig, Diaz and several other fighters who I feel based on wins and losses, should have been cut ages ago. Too bad for Jake. I saw a lot of potential with this kid. Hope he does great elsewhere and gets a chance to come back.

  • jcohl says:

Dana would do well to remember that every time he cuts a talented guy with potential like Jake Rosholt, he most likely adds another solid fighter to Strikeforce’s roster…

  • Ckdiesel says:

Next we will see Matthew mcconehay in an mma movie with rosholt as his double

  • fr702 says:

He got cut to get some more wins in lesser shows, he will be back

  • Fred says:

I hate to see him cut, but I could see him winning TUF in the future.

  • animosity says:

I saw Jake fight Leben in Portland and he put on a hella good show. He’s was controlling Grove the whole beginning of the fight, until he made a stupid mistake. I don’t believe he should have been cut just yet.

  • pain train says:

After Josh Neer got cut nothing the UFC does surprises me. Bring back Neer and get rid of some lay and pray wrestlers.

  • Justin H says:

Rosholt has a lot of potential, and was actually putting it to Grove before getting submitted. Some time away from the big leagues will do him some good.

  • dailce says:

Sucks that some good fighters get cut, and lose a shot at a decent career, just because of a few bad fights. I hate that the UFC keeps getting rid of fighters just because of a few losses. Take Kimbo for example: not really a great fighter IMO, but he brings in huge numbers. A few more losses and I bet dana will give him the boot too.

  • Gunslinger says:

wow!…if strikeforce picks rosholt up this could come back to bite the ufc in the rear….rosholt is a huge talent for the ufc…huge mistake imo….he was beating grove until the submission……dana you idiot :)

  • jcohl says:

Just a word in general about fighters getting cut:

The UFC, first and foremost, is about getting it done.
    What “IT” exactly?
Part of the “IT” is of course winning fights, but those wins also have to be in a fashion that makes people want to see you fight. First and foremost the guy signing the checks, Dana White.
The LAST thing Dana White wants to see is a fighter “Jay Heiron’ing” his way to wins inside of his Octagon.
And obviously another other part of the “IT” is generating revenue, whether thru charisma or in-cage performance or whatever. Dana has said a hundred times he’s rather see a guy lose a fight impressively than win a fight in a somnambulent fashion.
Dana has also said in a CNBC interview earlier this year that he’s always looking for that guy who people just want to see fight, like Kimbo Slice, even if he isn’t necessarily a wrestling All-American or a Gracie JJ blackbelt or a Golden Gloves champion.

Unfortunately for Jake Rosholt his public personna is like a substitute for Ambien, and his in-cage performances weren’t exactly FoTN caliber.
And beating the depressingly average Chris Leben isn’t exactly the MMA benchmark for success in 2009.

When a fighter enters the UFC, he should know by now what he’s in for, and what he’s up against. He should also be aware that if he doesn’t deliver, he’s going to be shown the door back to SmallShowville fairly soon.
Rosholt won’t be the last guy to get sent packing if he can’t put his man down in the cage, or at the very least interest people in seeing him try…

Why do I start to get the feeling that “get more wins in lesser shows” will become fighting for the up and coming organization that will end up with all the young talent and eventually become an equal org to the UFC in terms of payment and skill.

The UFC has the older guys that are amazing and are starting not to be able to keep all the young guns rostered as a result. Really they should hold onto some of the more talented young guys and not worry so much about the curb appeal of TUF alumni.
