Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Wants Rematch With Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Nov 30, 2009 at 2:43 pm ET31 Comments

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira“There are lots of good guys in [the UFC light heavyweight division], including Brazilians, that are showing their strength, like Thiago Silva, Lyoto, myself, there are a lot of strong guys in the division, the Americans as well, like Jardine, Evans, the category is very strong. I hope that the Brazilians dominate the division. God willing, it will happen… I would like to have the fight with Shogun again. Shogun is a great fighter, a great champion and he was in the best stage of his career till today. He has his merits, at the end of the fight I tried to take his back… If I had finished the fight there at his back, I would have been able to change the story of the fight.”

UFC light heavyweight contender Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, who made his Octagon debut at UFC 106 earlier this month with a first-round KO of Luis Cane, talks to Fighters Only about his hopes to rematch Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Nogueira and Rua first squared off at PRIDE Critical Countdown 2005, with “Shogun” earning a unanimous decision win.

Rua returns to action in a rematch with 205-pound champ Lyoto Machida at UFC 113 in May, while Nogueira is also likely to fight again before the pair could rematch by the end of 2010.

Just so I understand this correctly, is LittleNog asking for a title shot if Rua somehow manages to beat Machida in May?
I’m sorry, but there is just no way that beating Luiz Cane earns you a title shot, ESPECIALLY not in the most stacked weightclass of the planet’s top MMA promotion, no disrespect to LittleNog intended.
Maybe, MAYBE if he can beat a top 5 205er, thats one thing. But Luiz Cane?
Not exactly getting you a ticket to 205 titletown in the UFC.

I also thought there was this thing out there with the Brazilains about them not wanting to fight each other?
And now suddenly after gakking Cane, LittleNog wants a possible title shot?
Hey, much respect to LittleNog for wanting to deal with unfinished business in the cage, but with the title in the picture he’s going to have to wait his turn.
However if Machida beats Rua again, IMO a Rua-LittleNog rematch would seriously sell amongst hardcore MMA fans…

    • Renee Carroll says:

Obviously, it doesn’t matter who you fight in the UFC to get a title shot.

      Shogun’s fights in the UFC:
      Forrest Griffin, which he lost
Mark Coleman, which wasn’t an exciting fight
and Chuck. Yeah, he knocked him out but I don’t think after one amazing fight you deserve a title shot.

It just depends on who the UFC thinks is a good match up for a fight that fans want to see. If the fans want to see Rogerio vs. Shogun, they’ll most likely do it, but probably after Rogerio has one or two more fights.

      • Figs says:

I see your point and you can make a case for other divisions too. However, it has been noted on many occasions that Shogun got the title shot when Rampage and Rashad were tied up to TUF 10, and Rampage agreed.

      • jcohl says:

        I’m not saying you’re wrong.
I’ll just re-post what I’ve posted many times before, in that first and foremost, the UFC is Dana White’s personal fight club, and will remain so until such time that it stops being so damned profitable for him and his partners…

      • Renee Carroll says:

Yeah, that’s what’s good and also sucks about the UFC. There are plenty of fighters that are probably due for a title shot, but they’re only going to put on interesting fights that the fans want to see. So I definitely agree when you say that it’s Dana’s personal fight club. I guess it’s a good and bad thing.

    • Eldiablo says:

Little Nog asked for Rua, title or not.

      • jcohl says:

        Agreed.
But in asking for a fight with Shogun, who is going into a title rematch against Machida, isn’t LittleNog essentially asking for a title fight if Shogun beats Machida?

      • Eldiablo says:

man, why you always gotta get all “logical” up on me :)

      • chrisl says:

I agree with Eldiablo, this is like when Rampage wanted to fight Wandi after being beaten twice or when Liddell wanted Rampage. Heck Rampage only beat Eastman before fighting Liddell. When you’ve had a past fight with a guy and want a rematch it’s much different than asking for a title shot after one fight.

I just find it funny this is such a big deal to people when people were discrediting Shogun before his fight w/ Lyoto. Match-ups make or break fights and a good back story makes it even better.

Honestly, I’ve always been surprised Hendo and Big Nog haven’t fought a third fight.

  • Dirty says:

Ya he’s definitely one of those guys who can come into the UFC and challenge for the title with a fight or 2, he’s definitely in the same category as Shogun, Rampage, Rodrigo, Henderson …….. hes just been overshadowed a little by his big bro…..

  • dan says:

he will probably fight the winner of evans-silvain the spring my opinion. If he does and winns would say that could ern him a title shot

  • There is no way that Little Nog gets a fight with Shogun if Shogun beats Machida again. Little Nog is about 3 wins a away from a title shot and big wins against top contenders.

One thing that Little Nog needs to realize is that he is NOT Big Nog, very important that he realizes this because Big Nog already has earned his keep in the UFC and has way more street cred to his name than Little Nog. A win over Luiz Cane is impressive but not that impressive considering all the talent at 205 in the UFC.

Why not Little Nog vs. Tito Ortiz? or even Keith Jardine OR Couture??

Little Nog might get to fight Shogun if Shogun loses to Machida but if Shogun beats Machida again then no way does Little Nog get a fight with Shogun any time soon.

  • animosity says:

Tito would get handled by lil Nog IMO. He looked so stiff in the Griffin re-match. Besides I’m sure lil Nog’s jits is just as good as the guys he trains with daily. No need to mention names. That would be Tito’s undoing.

  • southcakalak says:

Yea does anybody know the rebound time on a broken skull

  • Markus J says:

    Begin conspiracy theory.

Next we will hear that Machida will need extra time to recover. So he sends Little Nog out to request a fight with Shogun in the meantime. (Undeserved might I add) Machida hopes that Shogun loses and falls down the ladder so he does not get a rematch. Machida refuses to fight Little Nog because they train together. Machida holds his title longer and dodges Shogun. Bottom line, Muay Thai beats Karate! The Machida era is coming to an end! =) Can’t happen soon enough!

    End conspiracy theory.

PS. Just having some fun guys. Likely not true but I just find it weird the timing for a training partner of Machida to call out Shogun. Something smells fishy.

    • jcohl says:

You aren’t be the first to peep a Casa Preta conspiracy in all of this, Markus J, and you sure as sh!t won’t be the last.
Some of us on other threads are starting to notice the shady maneuverings of BlackHouse, piloted by Ed Soares.
Consider the fighters under their auspices:
      Anderson Silva
      Lyoto Machida
      Big and LittleNog
      Jose Aldo
      Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza
      Junior Dos Santos
These are some serious names, and IMO Ed Soares is starting to throw his weight around in promotional affairs. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Soares was trying to buy Machida some time to adapt and evolve past the game Shogun dropped on him at 104 by sidetracking Shogun with LittleNog.

And every time Ed Soares opens his mouth, stuff like this becomes less and less conspiracy theory, and more and more circumstantial evidence of a directed effort to manipulate the rankings and the matchmaking process within the UFC…

      • bigworthy says:

That a deep way of thinking dude. i hope that sort of theory is just not true though? please don’t turn into boxing!

      • jcohl says:

And I realize that this whole BlackHouse thing is going to make me sound like Muldur, and maybe rightfully so.
However there are a number of instances in professional sports, particularly individual sports, wherein managers with multiple athletes under contract try to translate their position outside of the sport to influence goings-on inside the sport.

Many sports agents use that tactic every single day of the year during their negotiations, and for decades boxing was controlled by a small handful of men who had almost all of the top taletn signed to lopsides contracts.

Our sport is still in its adolescence, and needs to be wary of repeating boxing’s mistakes. Maybe I’m judging a guy like Ed Soares unfairly, but so far I don’t like what I see, which is namely a pattern which helps HIS fighters far more than the sport in which they ply their trade.
Simply put, such men should not be tolerated within the sport. In a lot of cases, sport ownership isn’t in much of a position to do anything to combat intrusive management.
In the case of MMA, which is flagshipped by the one man show known as the UFC, a man like Soares gets only as big as Dana White allows him to get, and no bigger.
Unless Soares wants his guys fighting on Showtime, and/or in Japan instead of the Las Vegas big show…

      • chrisl says:

yeah guys don’t look WAY to into the showing of Shogun in that fight. Shogun fought a completely different style than he had before and I mean that by saying he was much more diciplined and actually fought like a martial artist. Shogun put on arguably his best performance of his career but consistently peforming like that is another thing. My money is on Machida for a rematch because even though I love watching Shogun fight I thought his “wildness” would prove to be his downfall against Machida(and he managed to keep it down for one fight) but in a rematch, with him thinking he won, and Machida knowing what Rua can do now, it’s hard to bet against him. Either way I’m just glad the rematch is happening and whatever happens after than I will worry about when it gets here! haha

      • zac says:

I think you’re on to something here…theonly problem with your statement is the part about this guy getting only as big as Dana lets him.

This could be a very dangerous part of MMA….first you have M-1 thing, where Fedor wont fight in the UFC because of managment issues…now we have another guy Soares that manages some current and future (potentially) title holders. So if Dana boots him, and his fighters stay with them…we get Strikeforce with a whoooole lotta new talent.

This is a very ugly situation.

  • Dr.Doom says:

Stick the winner of silva-evans on the Rua-machida card vs lil nog .The winner gets the next shot . Rampage hasnt fought lately and with what is going on in his world , not ready to jump back into things …….

  • dock59 says:

Big Nog had two wins in the ufc and then got to fight for the interim belt, so i say lil nog is one win over a top 5 guy and he will get a title shot i bet. Because if rashad beats silva dana says the rampage fight will happen, and ifsilva beats evans he will probably fight lil nog for the title shot, well i think thats how it should be done

  • fr702 says:

Funny how everyone forgets how Shogun got the title shot, and just complains about how he did deserve it, I guess people will complain about anything and forget actually what happend o not so long ago, don’t mind the past it has no bearing on the now…

  • jazzkok says:

Anyone for lil nog vs forrest?

the winner of silva vs evans should get the winner of that fight for a shot at shogun after he beats the *former* champ (again) :D for the title
