Michael Johnson hasn’t been feuding publicly with Nate Diaz, like Anthony Pettis and Khabib Nurmagomedov have, but the lightweight knows some smack talk is heading his way. In fact, “The Menace” is looking forward to it.
Yes, recently the UFC caught a few people off guard by announcing that Johnson and Diaz will scrap on December 19th at UFC on FOX 17. It has the potential to be an outstanding fight, no question, but recently most of the talk regarding Diaz has been tied to Pettis and Nurmagomedov (although the latter had recently announced he changed his mind about calling for a fight with Diaz).
Now, anyone who has followed the career of Diaz, knows that the Stockton fighter (and his brother Nick) aren’t shy when it comes to saying what they really think, both in and out of the cage. This is likely why Johnson recently told MMA Junkie.com the following:
“He can’t help but talk sh-t,” Johnson said, while discussing the fact that Diaz will likely throw some verbal shots his way during the fight as well. “That’s what he does. I don’t have to hope that it’s going to happen. I can’t wait for him to start running his mouth. I’ll egg him on a little bit.”
“Regardless of his ranking, Nate is still one of the best lightweights in the world,” he said. “I’m not going to take that away from him – I’m just going to take his dignity away from him once we get in the cage.”
And this is why people love to watch Diaz fight. He may not be knocking on the title shot door right now, but there’s no question he’s a very dangerous and entertaining fighter to watch (the taunting helps in that department of course). If Diaz can defeat Johnson though, it would be great way to kick start another title run. Getting past Johnson will be tough, however, as “The Menace” is extremely well rounded, fast and explosive.
UFC on FOX 17 will be hosted by the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. In the main event, lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos will battle Donald Cerrone.
