Yes, UFC on FOX 17 continues to pick up some big fights, as not long after the promotion confirmed Nate Diaz will fight Michael Johnson, it’s announced Alistair Overeem will battle Junior dos Santos on December 19th.
As some of you will remember, this isn’t the first time JDS and Overeem have been scheduled to fight. A bout in 2012 fell through after Overeem tested positive for an elevated epitestosterone-to-testosterone ratio, and in 2013, he had to drop out of scheduled fight due to injury. Dos Santos ended up facing Mark Hunt instead and KO’d him with a spinning hook kick (no one forgets that of course).
The former heavyweight champ hasn’t fought yet in 2015. JDS (17-3) is coming off a very competitive, decision win over Stipe Miocic last December, and is ranked #2.
Overeem (39-14), on the other hand, decisioned Roy Nelson in March. Prior to that he KO’d Stefan Struve in December, after being stopped by Ben Rothwell in September, 2014. “The Reem” is ranked #9.
So, UFC on FOX 17 is shaping up to be pretty, pretty good, as it will be headlined by a lightweight fight between Donald Cerrone and champ Rafael dos Anjos.
The event will go down on Orlando, Florida, one week after the also stacked, UFC 194 card.
