Staph Infection Forces Gabriel Gonzaga Withdrawal From UFC 108

Gabriel Gonzaga
The rash of injuries and illness that has plagued the UFC recently, and forced the alteration of many of their scheduled cards continues. Today we find out that UFC heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga has been forced to withdraw from a scheduled UFC 108 bout against Junior dos Santos, according to a report from Steve Cofield.

Gonzaga was last in action with a UFC 102 TKO victory over Chris Tuchscherer, bouncing back from a UFC 96 loss to Shane Carwin.

It is unclear what will happen with dos Santos fighting on the card, since the heavyweight division of the UFC has been especially hard hit lately. Cofield writes that the UFC will wait until after Thanksgiving before beginning the process of selecting a replacement for Gonzaga.

I’ve heard the old phrase, “when it rains, it pours”, but its starting to look like the UFC in terms of injury and illness is sitting smack in the path of a meteor shower…

  • Stephen says:

Look out, Rashad or Thiago is next…

  • carls says:

I say send in Velasquez. But Pat Barry will likely be a strong candidate. Please nobody say Nog cause they train together.
Or Duffee if hes not still injured. But thats if the UFC thinks hes worthy after 1 fight.

Man the HW div is in dissaray.

    • Quinton says:

i agree with you the should have velasquez fight dos santos because that would be a great fight by itself but it would also give a #1 contender for the heavyweight title or interim title pluse ufc 108 really needs a match like this to help out the card

    • Figs says:

Pat Barry is out for six months too, but I like the idea of throwing Cain in this bout. That would be a decent co-main event if anything.

      • Quinton says:

it would be a really good main event considering those 2 are probley 2/3 fastest growing heaveyweight mma fighters (with shane carwin) but the problem is the carwin was in line for the title fight so they couldn’t just tell carwin you’re out of the title fight and these two are in and they really need to give carwin a fight pretty soon because he hasn’t fought since ufc 96 and lesnar probley wont be ready to fight until april or possible later

i train at team link, in ludlow aND i can tell you that this is not just a little thing. its pretty bad infection.
the heavyweight divison is losing lots of guys, plus its just not fun without brock. but once again KURT ANGLE WOULD BEAT ANY HEAVYWEGHT , LIGHT HEAVY WEIGHT ANY WHEIGHT IN UFC, DANA SIGN HIM

    • jcohl says:

      OK.
We’ve tried explaining this to you several times, friend.
While we can ALL respect Kurt Angle for what he did in Atlanta in 1996, and prior to that in other national and international wrestling tournaments, and SOME of us can appreciate what he accomplished thereafter in the cartoon world of professional wrestling, the brutal truth is that there isn’t a state athletic commission in the country that would allow Angle to compete in MMA, given his public and repeated neck issues.
Not to mention Angle’s repeated “encounters” with PEDs and other SAC-banned substances, as well as his issues with the Pennsylvania authorities stemming from an August arrest and Spetember hearing.
And at 41 years of age, this sure as sh!t isn’t the time to start training MMA, Herschel Walker’s excellent adventure notwithstanding.

If you’re trying to say that THEORETICALLY if Angle were able to compete in MMA, and could de-tox his system of years of alleged PED usage in order to meet licensure standards, that he would give a good accounting of himself, I’d agree with that POV, although IMO Angle would do better at 205 than at HW, where those ranks are currently dominated by specimens of sub-humanity not seen since the last Ice Age.
Although Angle REPORTEDLY dominated Lesnar in WWE closed door lockerrooms in impromptu shoot matches, in MMA someone like Lesnar would throw Angle a beating so severe it would make his MILFtastic ex-wife and adorable children cry hysterically.

And finally, “bbabababoey”, if you do in fact train at Team Link, I’m positive that we here at the frenZy would be FAR more interested in reading your admittedly unique POV on Gabriel Gonazaga and other MMA fighters that may train there in Ludlow, Mass, as opposed to your repeatedly posting requests for Dana White to sign a middle-aged man who reportedly already makes nearly 600 large a year from the TNA Wrestling company to what would most assuredly be a far smaller contract.
And a man that hasn’t a prayer of ever competing for any respectable MMA promotion on the planet…

I love Kurt Angle, but jcohl is right. Since he left WWE to go to TNA, he has abused his body with HGH and other steroids just to be able to keep up with a semi-full time schedule. The wear and tear on his body and neck is so great that the closest Angle will get to MMA would be as a wrestling coach.

      • bsbiz says:

Not to be too nitpicky, but steroids and HGH are two completely different things. One is an chemical structure analogous to the male sex hormone testosterone, the other is the human growth hormone. While they have similar effects, they are, in fact, completely different.

One you can test for in urine, either directly or through its metabolites. The other requires a blood test at this point in time.

  • japes78 says:

Geez this is just getting silly with the rash of injuries at HW. I would like to see Bobby Lashley signed. While he may not be ready to take on the elite HW the UFC has to offer, he would still be a draw and he seems to be steadily improving day by day.

  • jcohl says:

    Thanks.
I’m just trying to draw some of our newer posters into more productive exchanges…

  • nate says:

HEY JUST LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE, ONCE ALL THESE HEAVYWEIGHTS HEAL, THEIR WILL BE STACKS OF SUPERFIGHTS HA

  • Quinton says:

this ppv is cursed first lesnar drops out of the fight then anderson silva drops out then big nog now gonzaga when will it end

  • yorkyid says:

Looks like maybe more TUF guys will be signed than expected then. Maybe anyway! Like someone said let’s hope Rashad or Thiago aren’t next!!

  • jiujitsuMAN says:

no one else noticed that first Nog has a staph infection and now GG… they train together so perhaps there is a common problem they are facing..

perhaps where they train needs some sterilization or something to prevent any of there other fighters from also getting sick

  • White_Boy says:

Rolles Gracie and Mostapha Al-Turk is about to be for the UFC interim HW belt.
