Report: Georges St-Pierre vs. Dan Hardy In The Works for UFC 111 in March in New Jersey
Welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre’s upcoming title defense against top contender Dan Hardy is in the works to headline UFC 111, which will take place in March at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, according to MMA Fanhouse.
Prior to Saturday’s UFC 106 event, UFC President Dana White mentioned that the fight was expected to take place in February, likely as the main event of UFC 110 in Australia, but the promotion has instead booked Wanderlei Silva vs. Michael Bisping to headline UFC 110 and opted to have GSP-Hardy take place stateside.
St-Pierre (19-2) is currently riding a six-fight winning streak that includes title defenses over BJ Penn and Thiago Alves in 2009, but has been sidelined since July due to a groin injury suffered in his unanimous decision win over Alves at UFC 100.
Hardy (23-6) earned a shot at St-Pierre earlier this month with a unanimous decision win over Mike Swick at UFC 105, his seventh-straight win and fourth-straight inside the Octagon.

This is a smart move to opening “new markets” not that Jersey is a new market but NY would be and if you can show NY the amount of money to be made perhaps they would legalize MMA and for that to happen you need a huge draw hence GSP fighting in Jersey
I suppose.
I work in and around the NJ area, Jersey Shore mainly, during the summer months. Yes, there are some real rabid MMA fans there, but its not like we’re talking about Las Vegas or California in terms of fan knowledge and passion for the sport.
I agree that this fight is being used to try and pry NY open to MMA, but it just seems like such a shame.
GSP should be fighting either in Las Vegas or Cali, his native Canada, or maybe even the UK.
Anywhere other than the Soprano State would probably work better for me., but its not like I won’t buy the PPV anyway…
I live in Vancouver and since UFC will be coming here in 2010 (According to Dana) I selfishly would love to see that headliner, but also think it would be great for even more MMA growth North of the border.
jcohls would u take my chance to see gsp live away from me? i thought we were cool. i want any silva, randy, a nog, bj, i want this card so stacked the top of my head literally blows off from the awesomeness im witnessing
Gotta wonder how many of the Miller’s are gonna be on this card. Aswell as Edgar if im not mistaken.
Hardy does not stand a chance
I understand you’re making a brash example and I would agree he’s very unlikely to win the fight. As long as he is in the cage, he has a chance as anything can happen.
Nu Joy-zee
sounds like a pretty good main event hardy is really tough so i doubt gsp will finish him but i think it’s going to be another bj penn and thiago alves fight were gsp will just take him down and beat him up
I think if he does finish him it will be via sub, similar to hughes vs gsp 3.
possible but we really havn’t seen him use a lot of subs in his last couple fights
Matt sera took him down and hit him and hit him until he finished with knees to the body
John Fitch beat him standing up took him down and won
Bj penn worked him and worked him until he finished between the 4-5 round
Thiago alves same thing as the penn fight except longer
would love to c gsp in oz not sure weather the long trip to sydney from melbourne will b worth it for silva v bisping
heh, I actually agree with Hardy not standing a chance at all.
Hardy had great opportunities to finish Mike Swick, and when he hurt Marcus Davis he let that slide as well. *IF* he gets the opportunity to do real damage to GSP and stays as timid as he was against swick and davis he will fail… and that is assuming that he gets that opportunity. I think GSP has already faced the best that the 170lb division has to offer. Hardy will be a warm-up fight for his rematch with Koscheck, who will be a warm-up fight for his rematch with fitch, which will be a warm-up fight for………
Agree with you 100%. GSP and Silva are gonna have warm up for the next 5 years til they meet when they are past their primes and no one really cares anymore. Hope this fight is not the headliner.
its a championship fight, obviously its going to be a headliner? some people will never stop complaining…..
Ufc really needs to sign Antonio Bigfoot silva and put him in this main event. Gotta keep the silva main event streak going (thiago, Anderson, wanderlei)!
Hardy has a punchers chance but not the skills he really does’nt deserve a title shot but then again no welterweights do at this point in time
So should the title just remain inactive then, or should we put the best available forward? Think about it.
The title should remain inactive, that way people can complain about there not being enough title fights, duh.
@ bsbiz – I am thinking about it.
The problem here is that Dan Hardy is not the “best available” being put forward.
I’d much rather see Jon Fitch or even Thaigo Alves get a rematch than see Dan Hardy, an individual who strikes me as much circus clown as MMA fighter, given the opportunity to step in against GSP.
Or are we really supposed to believe that Dan Hardy is the most deserving 170er in the UFC by virtue of his kicking the sh!t out of Mike Swick?
This is another case of Dana being Dana, and once again using the UFC like his own personal fantasy fight club…
Being a brit i feel this fight should be over here.
Having a big fight over here is what we need look at the last card yea it was ok but we need a title fight over here. Plus maybe just maybe a uk crowd would give hardy a bit more of a chance? or then again maybe not!
How a fight between a Canadian MMA superhero and a rising MMA superstar from the UK drops in New Jersey is beyond me. IMO common sense says this fight should either be in Canada or the UK, but I suppose that Dana thinks that having this fight in the Soprano State will help the UFC and the sport gain some more traction in neighboring New York.
Whatever…
I really wish the UFC would pursue Jake Shield…i think because of his wrestling and ground game it would be a huge test for GSP…dont get me wrong GSP is my favorite fighter and athlete of any sport of all time but that fight is something i would pay to see and it would also buy time for the division to start unfolding i think koscheck should fight fitch and Alves fight Hardy then the winners of those two matches fight eachother and hopefully fitch or alves comes out better then before and that is a rematch id like to see with GSP…at this time its simply just the clock ticking that is giving dan hardy a title shot because there is no fight for maybe the most popular UFC fighter to fight…the UFC has to get GSP out there for the fans and money…thats why hardy is getting a undeserved title shot
