After weeks of speculation as to who Khabib Nurmagomedov will fight when he returns to the cage, the UFC has announced his next opponent, and it’s not Anthony Pettis.
Yes, the UFC has confirmed that Nurmagomedov will take on Tony Ferguson at the TUF 22 Finale, which will take place on December 11th. The card will be hosted by Las Vegas; however, the venue has yet to be determined.
Nurmagomedov (22-0) has been out for a while now, due to a knee injury he incurred last year. Since the grappling god decisioned reigning lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos in his last outing, and is ranked #3, many believed he might get tapped to fight Pettis next. In addition, Nurmagomedov had relayed that he wanted to fight “Showtime” next, but he also threw Ferguson in that list as well.
Ferguson (19-3) has been on quite the roll, as “El Cucuy” has won six in a row and has defeated notable vets like Gleison Tibau, Danny Castillo and Josh Thomson during that time. Ferguson is currently ranked #9.
So, this a huge, huge test for Ferguson, but if he can become the first man to defeat Nurmagomedov, he’ll be thrust right in the middle of the title shot mix.
