UFC 194: Frankie Edgar Says He’ll “be Ready to go” if Jose Aldo or Conor McGregor Drop Out

Frankie Edgar has already said he wants to stay busy, make some cash and not wait for a title shot, but now the featherweight has outlined another reason he wants to stay busy.

Recently Edgar raised a few eyebrows by relaying that he wants to fight before 2015 is up, rather than wait for the winner of Jose Aldo-Conor McGregor. Since Edgar is currently ranked #2 at 145, and has won four straight, the consensus is that he’s next in line for a title shot.

But, Edgar has said that since he wants to make some money, and is “not getting any younger”, he doesn’t want to sit on the sidelines. Now, in a follow up interview with Severe MMA, Edgar noted that there’s another reason he wants to keep busy. If either Aldo or McGregor goes down before their scheduled fight on December 12th, well, then (quote via MMA Mania):

“I’m hoping to fight around that time, anyway. Then I don’t have to worry about it. I’ll be in camp anyway if something comes up. I really do think [Aldo and McGregor] are going to fight this time around, but you never know. I was ready to jump in on 15 days notice. No matter what I’ll be ready to go again.”

That’s a very good point / strategy. Although, if either Aldo or McGregor gets injured (knock on wood) that would be a tragedy…

The former lightweight champ also added the following:

“I think I should be the guy, no matter what. I do want to fight again. I don’t want to wait until [Aldo and McGregor] fight and then how many months after that. I’ve got to take care of business but I believe I am the No. 1 contender.I feel like I’m competitive [at 145 pounds] and I feel like I’m right there. I’m one fight away. I think I could probably not fight and still get the title shot. I think I’ve earned that. Why would I knock on the door and not wait for someone to answer and leave?”

Based off Edgar’s last four outings, it’s pretty hard to deny that he shouldn’t be tapped for a title shot, even if Aldo decisioned him in 2013. Since then the popular fighter has defeated Charles Oliveira, BJ Penn, Cub Swanson and Urijah Faber.
