If a new report is correct, it looks like Stipe Miocic’s campaign for a title shot has failed to disrupt the UFC’s plans to book Fabricio Werdum-Cain Velasquez II…
Yes, according to a new report from MMA Junkie.com, citing multiple anonymous sources, a bout between Miocic and Ben Rothwell is being planned for UFC Fight Night 76. That event will go down on October 24th in Dublin, Ireland.
Miocic has been calling for a title shot ever since Werdum tapped out Velasquez in June to take the heavyweight crown. For a while, it looked like he could get it,as Dana White initially announced that either Miocic or Andrei Arlovski would challenge for the belt next.
Arlovski has since been signed to fight Frank Mir at UFC 191 on September 5th. Following UFC 190 on August 1st, White also confirmed that Werdum-Velasquez II was being planned for January, February or March.
So, there you have it. Miocic took out Mark Hunt in May to move his record to 13-2. The well rounded fighter is 4-1 in his last five fights, and his only loss during that time came against JDS.
Rothwell (35-9) has worked his way into the title shot mix thanks to a three fight winning streak, which includes wins over Matt Mitrione, Alistair Overeem and Brandon Vera.
UFC FN 76’s main event will feature Ireland’s own, Joseph Duffy, taking on American lightweight Dustin Poirier.
