Jose Aldo Weighs-in on Renan Barao Possibly Moving to Featherweight

If Renan Barao does end up moving from 135 to 145, his buddy, and the UFC’s featherweight champ Jose Aldo, will evidently support him 100%.

Following Barao’s second loss to bantamweight champ TJ Dillashaw last month, there’s been calls for the former champ to make the jump to featherweight.  One of those folks is Dana White, who believes Barao would be better served by not cutting so much weight, and fighting at 145.

Of course, since Aldo is Barao’s Nova Uniao teammate and friend, some have wondered whether that fact might deter “The Baron” from making the change. As far as Aldo’s concerned, however, he’s on board with whatever Barao decides.

While speaking to the media recently regarding Barao and this issue, Aldo stated the following (quotes via Bloody Elbow.com):

“We have to see what’s best for Barao. He suffers a lot to make weight. He’s kind of (big) for the division. I hope he moves up, yes,” Jose Aldo said. “I will root for him no matter what, no matter where he is, at 145 of 135. I hope he can fight well at featherweight, that he moves up well.”

Aldo has talked about moving up to the lightweight in the past, but it doesn’t sound like that’s in the cards any more.

“About me moving up, we were really close in the past. Now I’ll just stay here. We’re fine at featherweight, so we’ll keep it.”

The Brazilian star is expected to face interim champ Conor McGregor later this year, however, no date has been set.

It’s going to be interesting to see what Barao decides to do. On one hand, it’s easy to see why moving to 145 might be the right move to make. He has struggled to make weight in the past, and he’s been defeated by the champ now, twice.

On the other hand, before he faced Dillashaw, not too many people were talking about how Barao is better suited for featherweight.
