Glover Teixeira is keenly aware of how dangerous Ovince Saint Preux can be, even if you wouldn’t tell up-and-coming fighter’s to emulate the latter’s striking game…
Yes, not only has Saint Preux scored some highlight reel submission finishes since he’s arrived in the UFC, he’s also taken out Cody Donovan, Patrick Cummins and “Shogun” Rua with strikes. The explosive fighter’s approach is extremely unorthodox, and OSP has acknowledged as much.
Of course, this poses any interesting challenge for Teixeira, and while talking to MMA Fighting.com recently, he said the following about OSP:
“He beat ‘Shogun’ the way he did, so I don’t need to say anything about him,” Teixeira said. “He’s an explosive fighter, I can’t sleep in front of him. That same thing happened with me against (Fabio) Maldonado, when I was beating him up and he caught me with a big punch, but I won’t let this happen against him. I will keep my hands up and do the right strategy. Put some pressure, take him down. He has heavy hands, but you can see his striking isn’t technically perfect. He throws his arms, but he’s explosive and hits hard.”
Yes, ‘sleeping’ in front of the powerful fighter would definitely be a bad idea. It will also be interesting to see how Saint Preux brings it tonight, as Teixeira’s isn’t exactly known for being light handed either….On that note, Teixeira also added:
“I think he might try to take me down because of the way I lost my last fight, but this is MMA,” Teixeira said. “I’m well prepared for this fight. I brought in some great striking and jiu-jitsu guys, and I trained wrestling with ‘King Mo’ Lawal, so I’m ready wherever the fight goes.”
Teixeira is referring to the fact he was outwrestled and decisioned by Phil Davis in his last outing, which followed the Brazilian’s defeat to now former champ, Jon Jones. It’s a big fight for Teixeira, as a loss wouldn’t prompt his walking papers, but if he wants to stay in the title shot mix he needs a win.
UFC FN 73 will be hosted by the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.
