Although Frankie Edgar is next in line for a title shot, and will likely face the winner of Jose Aldo-Conor McGregor, “The Answer” doesn’t want to wait on the sidelines until then….
Since Edgar is riding a four fight winning streak, and has scored impressive wins over Charles Oliveira, Cub Swanson, and Urijah Faber, the former lightweight champ is sitting in the #2 spot at 145. In fact, when Aldo went down with a rib injury prior to UFC 189, a lot folks, including Edgar, thought the interim title fight should have gone to him, rather than Chad Mendes.
Well, now McGregor is the interim champ and is expected to fight Aldo before the year is out. But, as Edgar recently relayed to MMA Junkie, he doesn’t want to sit around and wait for the winner (quotes via Bloody Elbow.com):
“I’ve got three kids, man,” Edgar said. “I’m trying to make some money. I’m not getting any younger. I want to challenge myself and keep improving. The best way to improve is to test yourself in the cage.”
“I don’t know. I’m going to leave that up to the UFC. I know a lot of guys aren’t really available, but I definitely do want to fight before the year’s out.”
It’s interesting to hear Edgar cite money as a reason why he wants to fight sooner than later, and it’s completely understandable. If the 33 year-old were to wait for the winner of Aldo-McGregor that would mean his 2015 campaign would consist of just one fight. As fans know, even former champs and MMA stars like Edgar aren’t making comparable bank to many other pro athletes.
The big question is, however, who can he fight? Ricardo Lamas and Max Holloway are booked for bouts, and Mendes broke his thumb during his loss to McGregor. What about Jeremy Stephens? That’s an interesting fight no?
Stephens is coming off a stoppage win over Dennis Bermudez and is currently ranked #8.
