On Wednesday the UFC announced that the two will battle at UFC Fight Night 79, which will take place on November 21st in Monterrey, Mexico. The announcement comes one day after the UFC confirmed that Kelvin Gastelum will take on welterweight contender Matt Brown at the same event.
Sanchez (25-7) has elected to make the drop after scoring a widely criticized, split decision win over lightweight Ross Pearson last June. Sanchez, who has also competed a welterweight and middleweight, was coming off losses to Gilbert Melendez and Myles Jury.
Lamas (15-4) is looking to get back in the win column, as the #4 ranked featherweight was TKO’d by fellow contender Chad Mendes in April. “The Bully” had defeated Dennis Bermudez and Hacran Dias heading into that clash, after he was decisioned by champion Jose Aldo in February, 2014.
So, that’s an interesting addition to UFC FN 79 right? It’s a very tall order for Sanchez, but if he can get past Lamas, he’ll move right into the thick of things at 145.
