Matt SerraWelterweight veterans Matt Serra and Frank Trigg will square off at UFC 109 on February 6 in Las Vegas, as The Fight Network today confirmed the long-rumored bout with Serra.

Serra (9-6) has fought just twice since his shocking upset of welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre in April 2007, dropping back-to-back bouts to St-Pierre in April 2008 and Hughes in May 2009.

Trigg (19-7) returned to the Octagon last month after winning four-straight and 7 of 9 since leaving the UFC in 2005, but suffered a first-round knockout at the hands of Josh Koscheck.

UFC 109 is expected to be headlined by middleweight champ Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort and will also feature Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman.

Its pretty clear that both of these guys “better days” are behind them but this should be a good fight between two veterans of the UFC who have made waves and paid their dues long before the averge person even knew that the UFC existed.

I do wonder if a win could get Serra to drop to 155 and try to make some noise there. As long as he lays off the pasta that is.

    @Carls

I think Serra realizes too that his “better days” are long gone and doesn’t see a need to go to 155 lbs and have to sacrifice to get there. I really just think these 2 guys just like fighting and making money and there is no better place to do that than the UFC.

I also enjoy watching both of these guys fight and with all the recent injury problems in the UFC this fight is a good draw, as well as it has the potential of being very entertaining.

  • Matt Serra should just be happy that he beat GSP in the biggest upset of all time that will never ever be topped because he did it by brutal gNp ko-ing a clear 100% favorite that night.

Frank Trigg should also be happy that he is part of the 3rd greatest UFC fight of all time, a fight that will live on forever.

Both guys have some place in UFC and MMA History so that’s nice.

-Matt Serra will have the strength advantage and stand-up advantage, i think that Trigg’s best bet is to take Serra down and out wrestle him the whole fight because Trigg’s chin is more guilty than suspect and Serra is very capable of catching him with a bomb or two and ending this fight quick, something that i don’t think Trigg can do. Trigg can win by decision and ref stoppage but not by clear one punch ko, he doesn’t have that kind of power nor stand-up skill to do so, not that Serra has great stand-up skills himself but he does have that right hand. This fight will either go to decision or Serra will catch Trigg with that big right hand, i’m going with Trigg via decision.

I suspect if Trigg beats Serra, he either retires or goes down to 155. On the other hand, if Serra wins, I think that’s it for Trigg in the UFC.

I’m wondering if this is a situation wherein the loser either retires or gets cut from the UFC…

I would love to see Serra win via sub. He’s had a black belt in BJJ since before most UFC fighters put on gloves…I would love to see him show off that skill-set one more time.

I, too, could see him making a run at 155. STUPID CARBS!

serra is one of the best BJJ technicians, I give this fight to serra

Realy? Who has Serra subbed to garnish that accolade? Like I know hes no bum but come on man “one of the best”.

      • Avatar of fr702 fr702 says:

Matt Serra is one of the best Pure BJJ artists in America if not the world honestly, but this isn’t pure BJJ this is MMA and Serra has the “I wanna be a standup fighter complex” ala Sherk or Gurgel, hell during the Evangelista v Gurgel I yelled remember you are a BJJ BlackBelt Gurgel, but he like Serra enjoys to stand and yes those little arms has some power in them ask The Greatness… That being said Trigg’s weakness is the ground and especially BJJ (chokes primarly) and the last time Serra had a win in MMA via sub (because people don’t count GSP tapping due to strikes as a sub :P ) was Kelly Dullanty UFC 36 via Triangle choke (3/22/2002)

Does anyone know if this fight will be on pay per view???
