After watching Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira get outgunned and decisioned by Stefan Struve at UFC 190, Dana White is calling on the legendary heavyweight to retire.
On Saturday night, Nogueira was fighting for the first time since he was KO’d by Roy Nelson last April, and while he didn’t get finished, the Brazilian star took plenty of heavy shots. The defeat was the 39 year-old Nogueira’s third straight.
Following the event, White was asked to weigh-in on the bout and Nogueira’s future, and here is some of what the UFC President had to say (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“I don’t want to see Nogueira fight ever again,” White said. “He should retire.”
“I love ‘Big Nog,’ and I think everybody loves ‘Big Nog,’” White said. “He’s such a good guy. He’s respected by everybody, and he and I actually talked tonight. I’m done. I don’t want to see him fight anymore. He doesn’t disagree.”
White went on to say that he plans on meeting with Nogueira, and that he’ll likely offer “Minotauro” a job, as the promotion has done for other retired stars like Matt Hughes, Chuck Liddell, and Forrest Griffin.
Chances are the biggest Nogueira fans are likely on board with White here. The former PRIDE champ has nothing to prove at this stage of his career, and considering he’s lost three in a row, it might be a good time to hang up the gloves no?
UFC 190 went down at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. “Big Nog’s” twin brother, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, also competed and was decisioned by “Shogun” Rua.
