Shane RollerJose Aldo, Shane Roller, Cub Swanson, and John Franchi each earned a $10,000 “fight night” bonus for their performances at Wednesday’s WEC 44 event, WEC general manager Reed Harris announced at the card’s post-fight press conference.

In addition to winning the featherweight title in his win over Mike Brown, Aldo earned “Knockout of the Night” honors for his second-round knockout in the WEC 44 headliner.

Roller secured a fight-ending rear naked choke of Danny Castillo in the third round of their main card matchup to win “Submission of the Night”.

“Fight of the Night” went to Swanson and Franchi for their exciting back-and-forth striking battle that ended when Swanson forced Franchi to tap to a guillotine with just 10-seconds remaining in the bout.

10 k not bad for these guys, yes, but as it has been discussed before they should merger 145 and 135 into the UFC.

In fact, I’m still on the boat that they should have all weight classes still in the WEC as their B league, so that Zuffa can still capitalize on up and comers, and guys on their way out. They have dropped a ton of good fighters in the last year that could easily be in the WEC roster.

I’m inclined to agree with that stance.

From a fan standpoint, that makes sense. From a business standpoint…not so much.

I can see how having the WEC as a B-League might make sense from a business standpoint. However I will freely admit that Zuffa knows a whole lot more about the fight promotion business than I do and think that they’ve probably considered all options and are taking the course they see as best at this time.

I guess I’m a big believer in the old Sicilian proverb of, “your enemies grow strong on what you leave behind”.
When Zuffa killed the WEC 170, 185, and 205 divisions, they had to know that there weren’t going to keep all of those fighters.
I know that right now Zuffa feels that they have no real competition within MMA, and they are probably right. However if they keep cutting loose talented fighters, eventually someone, somewhere, maybe Scott Coker and Strikeforce, is going to have enough fighters to try and make the transition from regional to national, or international MMA promotion.
And one of these times, EliteXC and Affliction not withstanding, someone is going to make it, when you consider how our sport grows more popular every day…

For sure, this way we could see fighters that we are fans of that may be on a few losses in a smaller show. Thus, avoiding watching it on a low quality stream after the results have been posted all over the internet.
