You would think if you have defended a UFC championship six times, and scored finishes in four of those bouts, you would be one of the top draws in MMA. But in the case of Demetrious Johnson, that hasn’t transpired.
For a while, Johnson took some heat for not ending fights, but “Mighty Mouse” has proven in most of his recent outings that argument doesn’t hold any water. Then, of course, there’s those who say Johnson isn’t charismatic or brash enough, and that’s why the dynamic fighter has struggled to gain a huge fanbase.
Recently Johnson appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and while discussing the fact his fanbase isn’t really on par with his accomplishments, the flyweight stated (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“I guess what I can say is, what more do you want from me?” Johnson said. “I finished my last four title fights. I knocked out the best man in the world. I submitted a man who had never been finished in his whole entire life. I just don’t know what they want. Those are my questions I answer back to analysts, to people out there.”
“Those who are like ‘dude, you’re just f—— short, I don’t like watching short people fight,’ I can’t help you there, bro. This is how God made me and I hope you enjoy watching the big men fight.”
Of course, there a lot of folks who love watching Johnson fight, and understand that he is one of the planet’s best pound-for-pound fighter. If Johnson continues his reign, and continues to score highlight reel wins, the fans will come around.
After all, it wasn’t that long ago when some folks maintained the featherweights were just too small, and could never buzz fans the same way as say heavyweights. Yup, UFC 189 kind of proved that theory to be wrong.
Johnson is set to fight John Dodson at UFC 191 on September 5th. The two met in 2013 and Johnson won the bout via UD.
