Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman Likely for UFC 109 in February

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Nov 18, 2009 at 10:51 am ET42 Comments

Randy CoutureLight heavyweights Randy Couture and Mark Coleman are expected to meet in the main event of UFC 109 on February 6 in Las Vegas, according to Sherdog, marking the first time UFC Hall of Famers will square off inside the Octagon.

Couture (17-10), a five-time champion in the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions, returned to the 205-pound class on Saturday at UFC 105, scoring a unanimous decision win over Brandon Vera to snap a two-fight losing streak.

Coleman (16-9) is 1-1 since returning to the UFC in January, suffering a third-round TKO to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua before bouncing back with a unanimous decision over Stephan Bonnar in July. He had been slated to take on Tito Ortiz this Saturday at UFC 106, but was forced to withdraw from the bout with an undisclosed injury.

UFC 109, which takes place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center and airs live on pay-per-view, is expected to be headlined by middleweight champ Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort.

  • Since both guys are wrestlers and Hall Of Famer’s this should make for a very interesting fight also considering that both guys are coming off impressive wins over decent and younger fighter in Stephan Bonnar and Brandon Vera.

This will for sure be mostly a grappling fight and whoever can impose their will first will problably win.

Since Randy is in better shape and is a waay more well-rounded fighter than Coleman, i’m expecting Randy to control the fight and push the pace on Coleman because i’m sure Randy knows that Coleman gasses out pretty quick especially if you push the pace on him. And Randy has given Brock Lesnar his biggest challenge so far so that has to way in Randy’s mind just a little bit.

Coleman is strong and has a lot of heart so if he can get randy to the ground he might be able to score a decision but i don’t feel he can finish Randy unless he scores a clean hard shot to the chin. I think that since Coleman is old and gasses out pretty quick, Randy might have a good chance of scoring his first ever ko standing rather than gNp.

This should be a fun fight to watch.

Couture via tko in the 2nd.

do they mean co-main event? 109 is still being built for silva-belfort, right?

anyway, great match, wresting display for sure, coleman is tough as nails, but i bet couture keeps it standing and actually stops coleman via TKO with punches..

  • garrule says:

I love it! How often can you get TWO Hall of Famers together!? I think Randy and Hughes are on the “Out of Contention Senior Circiut”. That’s not an insult, actually a compliment. There aren’t too many guys that reach a stage where they’re not contenders, but get to keep fighting.

  • dontbedone says:

nice call, MK4.. think we came up with the same ideas… coleman is going to make couture look like a really good striker in this one..

  • dontbedone says:

Whoaa!! couture not a contender?? he goes on to beat coleman IMO , and they give him another fight for a title shot at LHW i think which could be Rashad, thiago, or even loser of machida/hua 2… the book is far from closed for randy couture..

  • Jdubb says:

Come on let CHUCK fight Coleman….

  • Planck16 says:

This has potential to be the most boring fight of all time. Two solid wrestlers relying on Octagon Control and no punishment to win a fight. Randy’s last fight was ridiculous…..serioulsy he did no damage to Vera and when he had him tired could not finish him. Couture wins this fight, but if Coleman relies on wrestling, this will turn into a match where they will have to be separated at least 15 times. I hate this match and the UFC is really digging deep for marquee names now. I would rather see Coleman vs. Liddell where at best we somebody get knocked out. They might as well let these guys take the gloves off and have a Greco-Roman champion in the UFC!

    • Markus J says:

I’d have to agree…. This will be one snoozer of a fight. Only reason this is getting “main event” or “co-main event” status is because its Couture. But my goodness will this ever be a boring fight. That’s 90 years of age in the octagon, lol. Who can impose his will and lay on top of the other guy longer before the ref stands it up? lol.

  • George says:

Giant older man versus smaller older man. I hope Randy beats Coleman, then beats Rashad, then beats Rua (who will have beaten Machida, again). I would convert to Scientology.

  • dontbedone says:

couture was smart to use his wrestling skills in his last fight-he had to neutralize veras striking… i dont think he has to do that this time.. i think couture will come out to drop coleman and finish with GnP… personally i dont think there is going to be anything boring about this fight.. i believe there is alot on the line for both guys..

  • swankcm says:

I’m actually really excited for this one….wish it would have happened about 8 years ago but I am still liking this one, and I don’t care if it’s a wrestling match thats why I love the SPORT!!!!! Doesn’t always need to be a knock out guys we can all appreciate two amazing athletes rollin

  • MMAFan says:

This will be far from a boring fight. Courture is a true master at finding winning strategies, and he can hold his own in a striking match. Even though he is known for his wrestling and ground and pound, he can be awesome on his feet when the situation is right for it (Tim Silvia). I see Courture keeping this one standing and wearing down Coleman, who has had questionable cardio in the past.

It is awesome to see two hall of famers still contending after such fantastic careers!

    • jazzkok says:

I think i’m with you on this one MMAFAN,

Both guys will probably want nothing to do with eachothers ground game and or clinch, so they will be working on keeping this fight standing. IMO couture’s got the better hands BUT as we saw in the shogun fight, coleman is a tough dude who can hella take a punch. He can take more shots than couture and it seems all coleman will need to do is land one shot to drop him. But both guys will definately have to work to finish eachother. Although 90 years of age in the octagon(lol markus j), there will also be to huge hearts in there so we should be in for a war dude.

  • Techincal.SPRAWL says:

I don’t think this will be a boring fight at all randy always comes in to entertain, even though i think they shuld hav given randy some one better then coleman, coleman will just get out worked for sure randy will put all alot of pressure on him and i see him crumbling… tko rnd 2 couture..randy is a far better stiker. IMO this is a easy fight for couture

    • bsbiz says:

He always comes in to entertain? What the H-E-double hockey sticks did I watch on Saturday?

      • Justin H says:

“Randy wanted to entertain, Vera just wouldn’t let him, he kept holding on to him and preventing Randy from getting takedowns, it’s all Vera’s fault, none of the blame for that fight being boring can be placed on Randy. Randy is the best EVA!”

OK, got that out of the way for the Couturians. ;)

      • jcohl says:

And I think we all know exactly what you watch on Saturdays, biz…
        :P

  • jeff k says:

    battle of the dinosaurs

  • harrison says:

this fight is to make randy look good when in fact they both need to retire especially if couture is just going to hold him on the cage like he did vera who i think should have won the fight

  • sempeckx2 says:

You know Coleman is going to come out swinging he LOVES to entertain, and he should have enuf take down and grappiling defense to keep it standing with Randy

  • oldman420 says:

Wow yah I seem to remember Couture’s last fight against Nog, that was a real snoozer too. I wonder what people think sometimes. Randy is in there to win plain and simple and if he can bring excitement he will. I was really impressed that Randy was able to neutralize some of the best MMA striking in the world of Vera, and beat him.

I also remember Randy fighting the Iceman 3 times jeeze those ones were snoozers too, oh and those Sylvia, GG fights almost put me to sleep too.

Some of you need to give your heads a shake and realize these are 2 legends who are stepping into the cage together and are going to let it all hang. Have some respect, and don’t complain that it’s a snooze fest untill it happens then complain.

  • jcohl says:

It amazes me how some posters can STILL disrespect someone like Randy Couture, or Mark Coleman for that matter.
These guys are in the Hall of Fame for a reason, and are still performing well enough to merit signing them to fight.
In Couture’s case, he’s one of the UFC’s biggest draws, and one of the most beloved and respected fighters of all time, so aside from the whining by Vera supporters, I’m not sure who could have a problem with this fight.
The truth is that with all of the illness and injuries, the UFC needs Couture more than ever, both in and out of the Octagon. Coleman earned another spotlight fight for his performance against Stephan Bonnar.

Simply put, if you don’t want to watch the fight, then don’t order the PPV or buy a ticket for 109.
And as for Randy Couture being the “best EVA”, all I’ll say as a Couturian is that I’ll consider every other Hall of Fame fighter for that honor when you can find one that has won as many championships in two different weightclasses like he has…
    ;)

  • harrison says:

u r crazy as hell randy couture cant beat Rashad evans,Machida,Thiago Silva,Rampage,Rick Franklin,Anderson Silva at 205,Shogun Rua,Forrest Griffin,Kieth Jardine, he couldnt even do any damage to Vera so what 90% r u talking about

    • jcohl says:

And if we’re talking about “damaging Vera”, I’d say that Couture setting Vera’s 205 title run back at least 6 months and dropping him perilously close to prelim status is pretty damned “damaging”.
      And I’m just curious, harrison.
Other than probably Anderson Silva, what UFC 185er do you think Randy Couture couldn’t compete with?

      • harrison says:

        nate marquart,wanderle silva,

      • jcohl says:

@ harrison – neither of those men could deal with Couture’s wrestling and Octagon Control game.
If a BJJ legend like BigNog couldn’t hook Couture, then Marquardt and Wand wouldn’t either. If Wand couldn’t beat Hendo his last time out, the for sure he’s not beating Couture in a cage.
Also, Wand isn’t going to look like an ax murderer when he’s getting ground against the cage annd fending off takedowns and Greco throws for the length of the fight…

  • harrison says:

I am not disrespecting couture it is just if he is going tome come out and hold all of his opponents on the cage and nothing else he needs to retire he is good he just cant compete with todays fighters light heavyweight or heavyweight even some middleweights

  • Onlytrue1 says:

    Yeah Randy is the truth…..

True that last fight was boring and just plain wrong, but Couture did what he had to do to win period point blank!!!

If Vera woulda just opened up a little he could have won that fight easily espeially in the 3rd rd when both guys slowed and were tired. But instead octagon control DOMINATED him and And Couture impossed his WILL and that DESTOYED Vera so much so he will never be the same fighter again. HAHAHAHAHAHa ….

I wonder will Randy get a title shot if, and when he beats Coleman.??? Just a question. A easy way to the title shot but hey it is RANDY who else is more deserving???
    (spelling)

    • jcohl says:

Always good to see ot1 in the house!

Also, I’ve been trying to make that point about Vera since Saturday night.
Vera didn’t HAVE to drag his a$$ against the cage for 80% of the fight. The man is a cross trained MMA fighter. He could have opened it up, taken it to the ground, whatever.
Instead, Vera sort of tried to beat Couture at his own [clinch] game, and lost a decision in a technical but ugly fight, which propels Couture back into the 205 spotlight, and Vera for the short term into the prelims…
      ;)

  • jordan says:

Thank god been waitin for this one for a long time. if randy wins i hope they put him up against franklin, n dana please bring back chuck n have him fight franklin

  • oldman420 says:

JCOHL the correct answer to who at 185 could hang with Randy.
Answer is Patty Cote, I think he’s just got to much power in his hands for Randy, could be reminisant of the Chucky fights, either he gets taken down and Randy’d or he KTFO Randy either way I think he could do it.

    • jcohl says:

I have a lot of respect for Patrick Cote, but I just don’t see him hanging with Couture.
Cote at 185 is dynamite, but at 205 he got roughed up by Tito Ortiz, a man that Couture LITERALY spanked in the Octagon.

Also, Randy Couture hasn’t weighed 185 since like the tenth grade, so talking about him fighting at MW is well beyond the realm of the hypothetical.

Finally, do you think that Cote could beat Hendo at 185?
I personally do not, although I think he would be a game opponent and make a tough fight of it.
Therefore if Cote couldn’t beat Hendo, the premiere student of Couture 101, then he definitely isn’t beating the master himself…

  • Paino says:

Hey Harrison the truth is in a real as you can get fight with rules so that no one dies, you dont have a ref keep breaking the fight up.If the ref never broke it up Vera would have eventually falling down from being wore out,and he would have been punched to sleep!!!Who cares if it is boring, it is real as you can get it.One man slowly breaking the other!!

  • Craig says:

The better Coleman’s cardio is the better the fight will be. We all know what Randy will bring, if Coleman brings good stuff it will be a great fight. Rankings and age don’t mean anything to me as long as both men bring it.

  • The Zan Man says:

Randy all the way , Coleman will gas

    Randy is alot more rounded

    Randy by tko

  • love4thedead says:

Doesn’t any of these whiners realize that any fight could be boring. It doesn’t matter who is fighting any fight at any given time could be a snoozer. It’s a chance we all take in watching to see what could potentially be a great fight.

  • Al Van Dal says:

What are they calling it ” TWO GEEZERS AT CEASARS” ???
