UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock LesnarUFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar is suffering from a bacterial infection in his intestinal tract, according to the Associated Press. The previously-undiagnosed illness will keep Lesnar out of action indefinitely, though he could be released from the hospital soon, UFC President Dana White told the AP.

Despite his impending release, White is encouraging Lesnar to check into the Mayo Clinic for addition treatment, though it’s not yet known whether he will require a “major surgery” that White said was likely on Monday.

White reiterated to the AP that Lesnar may never fight again, depending on his recovery from the illness.

  • I hope Lesnar gets better soon and hopefully we can see him in action sometime next year. I think that an Interim Title Fight is inevitable even though Interim Title Fights suck balls. Best of Luck to Lesnar though, hope the guy recovers as soon as possible.

  • dontbedone says:

interim titles give fighters something to fight for in the absense of a champion, and the interim belt says the belt holder is the best that is there at that paticular time..

and if an interim belt only means #1 contender status, then the HWs are all after that anyway and will know exactly where they stand if the absent champion returns….

  • shogun1fan says:

I know this might sound a bit harsh but depending on how long he is out for i think brock should be given the option to ‘stand down’ as the champ, this would give ufc heavyweights the chance to battle it out between top 4 or 5 contenders, of course if brock gets better he can come back as the no1 contender. Just an option to keep things interesting

  • Chrisl says:

    sweet I guessed right…

like I said on another post, the only way to get rid of the pockets in the intestines(where the bacteria form) is through major surgery. Otherwise he’d have to switch to a pretty strict diet which may prevent him from being able to effectively train and cut weight.

  • yorkyid says:

At least that doesn’t sound as bad as initially thought. I hope to see him fight the end of year show 2010! If that is too soon for our big friendly behemoth then the following summer! Hope he gets well soon.

  • Greg says:

I think an interim tournament would be great, top 4 guys fighting Bellator Style (withing a 1 month period), bring some interest in the Heavyweight picture, then when Lesnar is 100%, we fight the Interim Champ…I think we need so real activity in this division…

Having the 2 Semi-Final fights on the same card and then a month later a Final’s fight would be great….We have alot going on in the LHW and Middleweight Divisions…

    Your Thoughs?

  • thestandard says:

Let’s just make the last two guys to hold Heavyweight Gold before Lesnar battle it out.

Mir vs. Nogueira 2: The Reckoning!

Either that or have a four man tourney as suggested above. Mir vs. Carwin and Nogueira vs. Velasquez.

Although, right now with injuries, surgeries, and infectious diseases considered, the only fight possible is Mir vs. Velasquez.

  • JOHNBOY says:

i hope lesnar gets better soon and dont really wana sound like a cold hearted tw*t but lesnar should give the belt up, interim belts suck ass its abit like winning the carling cup in football yeah u got a cup but it dunt mean shiiit.

    • Bsbiz says:

The Carling Cup means you get to play in Europe if you hadn’t already qualified… That’s not nothing…

      • johnboy says:

wel to be honest who really cares about europe, anyway im just against the interim belt if ur not fit egnough to defend ur belt you should get striped of it, i mean i cant belive im the only one against the interim belt ur not really the champ, gsp knew that and so do it

    • Chrisl says:

why should he give up his real belt? Just because the interim title guy doesn’t like the word interim?

      • jcohl says:

        Yeah.
The “giving up the belt” thing didn’t register with me, but eventually Dana will do what he has to do for the good of the UFC, just like he did with Frank Mir, IF it comes to that.
And we’re still in the IF stages here, as no one knows anything with cement certainty…

  • garrule says:

Interim Belts don’t bother me one bit…it’s not like we all don’t get what’s going on…and if anything, it let’s the next two best guys get 5 rounds. Dana should do it…if it takes a year for Brock to come back, and someone like Velasquez becomes Interim Champ, think of the hype for THAT fight! Again, I say do it!

    • jcohl says:

I agree that from a promotional POV, Interim titles make a lot of sense.
Also, in this specific case, the UFC has been aching to really feature the HW division, and this latest setback is brutal. Not necessarily for the sake of the sport, but for the sake of the UFC, someone weighing more than 206 pounds needs to be out there bearing the standard and wearing the HW gold of the UFC, even if it’s gold-plated and not the real deal.
      ;)
However if a HW Interim title fight is to be signed, it HAS to be Carwin and Velasquez, or Carwin and Mir.
Mir has recently beaten BigNog, and although he’s a rising MMA HW superstar, and I’m not 100% convinced that Velasquez can make it our of the first round with Shane Carwin, who is Neanderthalic in comparison to Velasquez.
I know that sounds harsh, but seeing as no one else has taken Carwin to a second round, I think its a fair assessment…

  • zac says:

i think if hes out for more than 6 months we need an interim champ…if hes out for more than a year, i think its unfair to all the other competitors that they are fighting for a no.1 contender spot.

I hope Brock recovers soon so this is a non-issue…but I would hate to see some of the up-and-comers who’ve been fighting their *sses off get an asterix by their name because Brock isnt in any condition to fight for the forseeable future. Why couldnt he give up his belt if hes out for a year, and come back and be the no. 1 contender?

    • Justin says:

Mir didn’t come back the number one contender, and Randy didn’t have to give up the belt during his contract dispute, which lasted roughly a year.

      • zac says:

I’m not saying they shouldn’t have either…but really, so many things happen and the landscape changes so much that I dont think Mir, Carwin, Velasquez, Nog, etc. should have to hang out for a year or possibly longer to be declared an undisputed champion because of an injury or illness.

Nobody doubts Brock a legit champ, it just sucks that other people are out there trying to become champion, fighting consistently and they may be Interim champ and get injured themselves and always have an asterix by their name…as they were never undisputed champ.

this is all hypothetical anyways since we dont know how long Brock will be out. Just my opinion that 1+ years from the sport should mean you get to fight for your belt upon return…not put people in the position to be called paper champ just because you are unable to compete.

      • Justin says:

Actually a lot of people doubt Brock is the legit champ (no one important like Dana White or Brock’s UFC competitors, but nonetheless). I get what you’re saying, and certainly a year is a long time for someone to be gone and retain their belt. I’m not sure how long Mir was out before they stripped him, and of course when he came back he was not the same “Frank Mir” that was the champion when he got hurt, he has only recently re-reached that level.

      • jcohl says:

@ Justin H – Mir won his title in July 2004, had his bike accident in September 2004, and was stripped in August 2005.
So lets say it was about 11 months of inactivity and a poor prognosis that led to the title being stripped?

  • ptran78 says:

I am guessing it is C-Diff, but Dana White probably is wanting him to be checked for Crohn’s, or Ulcerative Colitis at Mayo Clinic. If he has to have part of his intestine taken out (which can happen in severe cases), he wouldn’t be fighting again because he would have a colostomy bag. Hopefully he recovers quickly from whatever this thing is because any intestinal disease or condition really is painful, and can even incapacitate a tough guy like Brock. Hope he gets better soon.
