Sean Sherk vs. Rafaello Oliveira Set for UFC 108 on January 2
Former lightweight champion Sean Sherk will return to the Octagon against Rafaello Oliveira at UFC 108 on January 2 in Las Vegas.
Sherk announced the matchup on Thursday in an interview with wicombatsports.com.
Sherk (33-4-1) was stripped of the lightweight title in 2007 after testing positive for steroids and has gone just 1-2 since returning to action, earning a win over Tyson Griffin last October while suffering losses to BJ Penn and, most-recently in May, Frankie Edgar.
Oliveira (9-2) had his three-fight winning streak stopped in his UFC debut in September, suffering a unanimous decision to Nik Lentz at UFC 103.
UFC 108 is headlined by a matchup between heavyweight contenders Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez and also includes Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva, Junior dos Santos vs. Gabriel Gonzaga, and Carlos Condit vs. Paul Daley.

Can sherk just f-ing go back to his awsome wrestling and fight smart? then he will be able to climb the ladder against the top again…
I would love to see the old sherk vs Maynard some time in the future.
do you really mean that. you would like to see gray vs sherk….
I seriously doubt that for some reason. That match would be really really boring and would pretty much convince all fans that neither of those two should ever fight for a title.
This is an easy fight for sherk I almost feel sorry for Oliveira getting screwed over
Ran into Sean at the Can-Fit-Pro conference this past summer in Toronto. Was able to talk with him quite a bit. Real nice guy. I wouldn’t want to be the first person who has to fight him when he gets back. He’s training hard. He wasn’t injured when I saw him in the middle of August so his training injury must have happened later on. Just want to point out, he’s much smaller in person lol. The guy is SHORT but his forearms are the size of a thigh!
When asked why he didn’t take/wrestle B.J. to the mat for some ground and pound he told me and I quote “I wanted to keep it standing for the fans because it was a PPV main event.” While I respect that, I don’t think it was a smart choice to stand with B.J. and get picked apart the way he did.
i’m always happy to find out that these guys are cool. I’m not really a fan of sherk cuz i think he’s a boring fighter, but props to him for caring enough to want to put on a good show against bj. i have to wonder though, did it also have a little to do with the fact that maybe he couldn’t take bj down? his wrestling is top notch but bj’s take down defense is second to none. and what’s the point of taking bj down if you’re sherk? he’s a wizard on the ground. best of luck to the guy but i don’t see him ever getting another shot at bj, mostly cuz there’s really no area that he can beat him at.
Sean Sherk is yet another poster boy for MMA fighters with strong wrestling backgrounds p!ssing that advantage away by keeping fights standing for too long, although I agree that grounding BJ Penn is a mistake at 155.
Sherk IMO needs a win, and the more dominating the better. Sherk should muscle Oliveria to the mat, and pound the sh!t out of him until the ref stops the fight.
THAT would put him back on the 155 radar quicker than most anything else I can think of…
and those little T-Rex arms of his doesn’t do him any favors in the reach department.
